I have some Gateway war stories myself. I worked for a company a few years ago that bought Gateways. AFAIK, not one machine came in without a flaw. A friend bought one, and the monitor arrived DOA. Later, I worked for another company. A new Gateway arrived on my desk in a box. The secondary IDE channel was DOA. In contrast, while I don't have any recent Dell experience, I bought 3 refurbished systems from Compaq with employee discounts. The desktop and one laptop have not had any hardware issues. I put some additional memory in the other laptop, and it was causing some problems, but not due to the hardware. Both laptops run Linux with no problem. I know people who have had problems with Dell, Compaq, HP, and IBM systems, but for the most part, these problems are not common. My personal desktop is a homebuilt.
I admit to liking IBM Intelistations. 'Gotta find a newer one for a good price. :) Fred -- "Running Windows on a Pentium is like getting a Porsche but only being able to drive it in reverse with the handbrake on."
