Gateway has always used whatever parts they could get cheap this week. No way to tell what's inside the thing until it's too late. I've seen too many people get burned that way to ever think about buying one. Mike- -- If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs... As do they all, within quality constraints, including Dell, IBM, HP, General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, etc. Put five identical boxes on the bench and look inside. Three will have differing components w/o any notice to the buyer. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/photos

That's been my opinion of Gateway for quite awhile, but thought MAYBE there was something I'd "missed" recently. I've avoided them for sometime and haven't been inside one in well over a year. 'Guess I'll pass it up. Fred -- "Running Windows on a Pentium is like getting a Porsche but only being able to drive it in reverse with the handbrake on."

'Guess I'll pass it up. I have some Gateway war stories myself. I worked for a company a few years ago that bought Gateways. AFAIK, not one machine came in without a flaw. A friend bought one, and the monitor arrived DOA. Later, I worked for another company. A new Gateway arrived on my desk in a box. The secondary IDE channel was DOA. In contrast, while I don't have any recent Dell experience, I bought 3 refurbished systems from Compaq with employee discounts. The desktop and one laptop have not had any hardware issues. I put some additional memory in the other laptop, and it was causing some problems, but not due to the hardware. Both laptops run Linux with no problem. I know

I know people who have had problems with Dell, Compaq, HP, and IBM systems, but for the most part, these problems are not common. My personal desktop is a homebuilt.
I admit to liking IBM Intelistations. 'Gotta find a newer one for a good price. :) Fred -- "Running Windows on a Pentium is like getting a Porsche but only being able to drive it in reverse with the handbrake on."
So ask to test a machine which is setup.
Use Knoppix if it finds the hardware your ok.
