Assuming your vid card is set up correctly, have you tried just going to: Configure Desktop > General > Desktop and checking the box next to Enable desktop effects? ie, don't use Compiz directly.
Yep, and that does work...but with very subdued effects... I want to try some of the 'flashier' effects.. that you can only get if using Compiz directly...?? (I could be wrong.) Now I'm curious... what flashier effects? I assume some are missing from the list of available effects you can turn on in Configure Desktop > General > Desktop > All Effects tab...
And.. I click Send instead of Save... I didn't finish what I was hoping to type :-P
As an experiment, I added the unofficial Compiz extra plugins and compared again in the All Effects tab.. no new effects available. Hmmmm
I installed the rest of the compiz stuff, and in Configure Desktop > Personal > Default Applications > Window Manager I set it to Compiz. The various Compiz options are set via the Simple CCSM (at least on my system/setup)... and that's when things start to a bit wrong.. I've been able to crash things a couple of times where Compiz really went off on it's own and all Windows decorations disappeared... making it very hard to rest things back to normal.
Oddly... I seem to have less options and splashy things available to me via this route than the "normal" KDE setup route.
What I am missing (at least on initial poking at it) is the Emerald window decorations... even with the Emerald Manager up and running.. using either way of enabling desktop effects.... still no changes. Hmmmm....

The graphics effects under the All Effects tab is for kwin, not for compiz. You have to go through ccsm to configure effects for compiz. I bet there's some incompatibility between kde4 and compiz versions for compiz to be crashing like that, but I haven't used compiz since kwin got wobbly windows, so can't say for sure what it is. For what it's worth, I can't get compiz to run without it either crashing or running with no window borders, but then I'm using kde4 factory.
