[opensuse] KDE 4.3 and Compiz
Have just upgraded to KDE 4.3 and thought I would try a bit of extra 'eye candy' so attempted to change the window manager to Compiz. When you select compiz, it seems to change it immediately, and then give a countdown time to make the default. So far so good.... If you select the OK, make default, Compiz just about immediately crashes leaving no window decorations... only escape is to revert to kwin. Anybody got any suggestions...? Have onboard Intel (G45/G43) graphics... (my guess... :-( ) Thanks, John. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Assuming your vid card is set up correctly, have you tried just going to: Configure Desktop > General > Desktop and checking the box next to Enable desktop effects? ie, don't use Compiz directly. Yep, and that does work...but with very subdued effects... I want to try some of the 'flashier' effects.. that you can only get if using Compiz directly...?? (I could be wrong.) Now I'm curious... what flashier effects? I assume some are missing from the list of available effects you can turn on in Configure Desktop > General > Desktop > All Effects tab... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

And.. I click Send instead of Save... I didn't finish what I was hoping to type :-P As an experiment, I added the unofficial Compiz extra plugins and compared again in the All Effects tab.. no new effects available. Hmmmm I installed the rest of the compiz stuff, and in Configure Desktop > Personal > Default Applications > Window Manager I set it to Compiz. The various Compiz options are set via the Simple CCSM (at least on my system/setup)... and that's when things start to a bit wrong.. I've been able to crash things a couple of times where Compiz really went off on it's own and all Windows decorations disappeared... making it very hard to rest things back to normal. Oddly... I seem to have less options and splashy things available to me via this route than the "normal" KDE setup route. What I am missing (at least on initial poking at it) is the Emerald window decorations... even with the Emerald Manager up and running.. using either way of enabling desktop effects.... still no changes. Hmmmm.... C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The graphics effects under the All Effects tab is for kwin, not for compiz. You have to go through ccsm to configure effects for compiz. I bet there's some incompatibility between kde4 and compiz versions for compiz to be crashing like that, but I haven't used compiz since kwin got wobbly windows, so can't say for sure what it is. For what it's worth, I can't get compiz to run without it either crashing or running with no window borders, but then I'm using kde4 factory. Ah, that makes sense (All Effects and kwin). I've rarely had a lot of success with Compiz in general. It breaks more than works, but since it's not that important to me, I've net really dig around to find out why. The usual sequence, is enable Compiz, have it crash immediately and loose all window decorations, spend 10 mins trying to convince it to use kwin again.. rince repeat until I get tired of it... put it away for a while and try again in a few months. I've had the same experience with KDE4 and KDE3. Sometimes, it'll work perfectly... most of the time not... whereas, the equivalent/same effect enabled in the KDE4 Desktop config work 100% of the time. Once I got that, I haven't bothered with the raw Compiz. C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I have been running compiz on 11.0 with the latest kde 4.3 release without any problem. I am still running compiz 7.8 on my laptop. The new 8.2 works fine with nvidia, although you might have to set the "blur" option to get around an nvidia bug that sets the card in low power mode. I vastly prefer the compiz effects to the kde4 effects. The timings and smoothness of the compiz rotations put the kde4 effects to shame. On my nvidia boxes I have been running compiz 8.2 for several months with all 4.3 betas and the official 4.3 release. It works fine. The key is to use "Fusion-Icon" or the command line to start compiz after kde loads. I have a bug open about the failure of kde to handle compiz as the default WM and hopefully it will be fixed. One more thing you will need to do is fix the pager after compiz starts. (I have a bug open against that as well). To fix it, just restart plasma-desktop *after* compiz is running and all will be well. I have a script called "rsplasma" I just put in my ~/bin directory. After compiz is running, I just use "Alt+F2" "rsplasma" and I'm done. After you do it the first time all you have to do is hit "Alt+F2" "r" and the run command will fill in the rest. The script is: #!/bin/bash kbuildsycoca4 kquitapp plasma-desktop >/dev/null 2>&1 kstart plasma-desktop & >/dev/null 2>&1 Maybe by kde4.9 you will be able to run compiz as cleanly as you could under kde3. Until then ..... (fill in your favorite kde4 saying) I would be happy if I could just open konqueror and have the detailed view window panes look the same each time... -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
