I am a home user of Linux Pro 8.0. Does anyone really see a need to update to 8.1?
as w/ all Linux stuff, the answer rather depends on your needs .. If , for instance , you need a lot of Usb support, and would like to have it auto configure for you , then yes... the usb support seems to be much improved. Be aware there are still some "gotchas" w/ 8.1 .. tho it will update finally <G> ( it was a tad of a problem earlly one to get fixers etc, but it still takes an interminable time to load the list if you choose manual update... , I have no idea how long it would take w/ a telephone line, but it seems to be 30 mins or so ( i stopped watching and go get lunch or coffee or something .. when I get back the list is loaded , complete w/ all the tings that yast2 thinks is wrong w/ my current setup ( those updates "applied" which have a later date for some reason always come up as needing to be replaced by earlier updates .. <sigh>) the hardware database seems much improved also .. and we are slowly getting parity w/ "that other OS" as far as the newer "toys" are concerned i.e. little robots , or the little usb hard drive keychain gadgets ... support as yet is spotty for "firewire" but there is some .. If you are happy w/ 8.0 and have a solid setup , your normal Updates to that will eventually give you the same hardware support IIRC it's all a matter of what you want or what you need. Most of my workstations have 8.0 still , and a couple which need heavy duty usb support have 8.1 choose your poison <G> -- j afterthought: As the twig is bent, the birds fall off.
