I am a home user of Linux Pro 8.0. Does anyone really see a need to update to 8.1? If so, what differences did you see? Thanks. Eric
If you have waited this long you might as well wait for 8.2 or what ever they choose to call it. SuSE usually does a release every six months or so. Skipping every other one is a defendable purchasing strategy. The bigest change I noted was KDE 3.0, I would bet that 8.2 will have KDE 3.1 They also changed some of the startup scripts but that is a minor detail for a desktop user. I dont see any need untill version 9 comes out. If it aint broke, dont fix it. At most I would update the kernel. And if you want, you may update just the packages you need. These packages are freely downloadable. Leo Eric Gies wrote:

as w/ all Linux stuff, the answer rather depends on your needs .. If , for instance , you need a lot of Usb support, and would like to have it auto configure for you , then yes... the usb support seems to be much improved. Be aware there are still some "gotchas" w/ 8.1 .. tho it will update finally <G> ( it was a tad of a problem earlly one to get fixers etc, but it still takes an interminable time to load the list if you choose manual update... , I have no idea how long it would take w/ a telephone line, but it seems to be 30 mins or so ( i stopped watching and go get lunch or coffee or something .. when I get back the list is loaded , complete w/ all the tings that yast2 thinks is wrong w/ my current setup ( those updates "applied" which have a later date for some reason always come up as needing to be replaced by earlier updates .. <sigh>) the hardware database seems much improved also .. and we are slowly getting parity w/ "that other OS" as far as the newer "toys" are concerned i.e. little robots , or the little usb hard drive keychain gadgets ... support as yet is spotty for "firewire" but there is some .. If you are happy w/ 8.0 and have a solid setup , your normal Updates to that will eventually give you the same hardware support IIRC it's all a matter of what you want or what you need. Most of my workstations have 8.0 still , and a couple which need heavy duty usb support have 8.1 choose your poison <G> -- j afterthought: As the twig is bent, the birds fall off.

As far as I was concerned, 8.0 was the version from hell. It was unstable (at best) on all machines I used ran it on. 8.1 is the complete opposite. No idea why this should be as other people seem to be happy with 8.0. Both versions get/got regular updates including everything I find on the suse ftp sites, and now kde 3.1. My only problem at present is that I often have to kill dhcpcd and ask for another IP address from the server. -- opinions personal, facts suspect. http://home.arcor.de/36bit/samba.html

And some are running 8.0 (very stable) and gave up totally on 8.1. (8.1 Pro is sitting here on the shelf) I ran 8.1 for 4 days and then gave up fighting the fires. -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ + Bruce S. update to 8.1? If so, what differences did you see? I've been using SuSE for quite a while. While I've found a few things to complain about I've found all the releases I have installed to be stable. I usually install on my laptop first since I can always trash it with little or no incionvenience. I usually do new installs since I
