Indeed. When I let the NIS client restart, it couldn't find an NIS server. (The old server was set up that way, and having updated the workstation, it still expected it to be there.) I've installed the NIS server on the machine where it's expecting it, and I suspect I'll soon have the problem solved. Thanks for your input! It appears to have pointed out the problem.
