I had this trouble with an isapnp card once. I could play CDs but nothing besides that. No mp3 or wav.... The problem was I didn't actually have the card configured correctly. Apparently it takes less to play CDs. You might have to change interrupt or io or something. Your problem is not the player you use but your card setup. as usual the alsa mailing list is great.
