I had this trouble with an isapnp card once. I could play CDs but nothing besides that. No mp3 or wav.... The problem was I didn't actually have the card configured correctly. Apparently it takes less to play CDs. You might have to change interrupt or io or something. Your problem is not the player you use but your card setup. as usual the alsa mailing list is great.

No it wasn't that, or the XMMS plug in someone else suggested. I don't know what iit was but what happened was I decided to go back to OSS so I started by restoring /etc/modules.conf to the version that existed before alsconf altered it, tried to run OSS and that wouldn't install because of kernel incompatibility.
