Right click on the panel->Add->Special Button->Non KDE Application. Point it to your binary.
Lovely - just what I needed. However, there seems to be no way with such a button to change the path to the binary if needed. Is this possible also, or do I just have to recreate the button?

Er... you mean change the keyboard shortcut which switches between virtual desktops? I don't think so, but maybe I just can't see it either. :o)
