Some additional ideas to investigate... have you inspected the contents of ~/.kde/share/config/kmixrc yet? Also, there are some settings in KDE Control Center > Sessions that allow you to modify your default session saving/starting behaviors. It seems to me you're returning to a default session that has kmix set to launch.
I have checked kmixrc and found nothing that helps. The session manager is set to start with an empty session.
