Is there anyway to stop the Kmix panel from opening, when logging into SUSE 10? I don't like having to close it every time I log in. If I need it, I know where to find it. I just want the mixer to start up, without the panel appearing. tnx jk

Hi James, Have you right-clicked on it to see what config options are available? Carl

Yes. There are none for that.

Hi James, Some additional ideas to investigate... have you inspected the contents of ~/.kde/share/config/kmixrc yet? Also, there are some settings in KDE Control Center > Sessions that allow you to modify your default session saving/starting behaviors. It seems to me you're returning to a default session that has kmix set to launch. regards, Carl

I have checked kmixrc and found nothing that helps. The session manager is set to start with an empty session.

I wonder if 'start with empty session' points to a default definition that, itself, has been somehow modified? Have you tried closing KMix and then saving that session? Might that become the new default? Sorry for not being more precise, James. I'm running 10.0 with a (finally!) well-behaved Gnome and am adverse to the idea of experimenting again with switching between KDE and Gnome lest I foul things up again. This means I have to boot into 9.3/KDE to check this stuff out ;-) Carl

Hi James, I was having trouble with kmix too, though a little different than your problem, but similar enough I tried something to fix it from the replies you've been getting. Every time I used Kalarm to start alsaplayer for me, I'd wake up and see the big kmix thing slapped on the screen...every time. It would take over all my settings I had in alsamixergui and I had to redo everything. So, I went into ~/.kde/share/config/kmixrc and looked at things (I didn't really have a clue what I was doing, but...). I did find this though: startkdeRestore=true I figured, what the heck, and set it to startkdeRestore=false Then I used kalarm to test it...kmix did *not* pop up! Not sure if this will work after a restart, but it can't hurt to try it. JB

Unfortunately, it didn't work. :-(
Hi,
If you open Kmix window, under Settings/Configure Kmix... you shall
find a couple of options named "Dock into panel" and "Enable system
tray volume control".
I would definitely experiment with those a bit...
Thanks,

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. Didn't help. tnx
Well, I confirm, in my case (Suse 10, on x86) disabling those two
settings and closing the application doesn't bring Kmix up again at
next reboot. Just to double-check the app is not running in the
background:
ps -e|grep kmix
has an empty output.
I've noticed that there are some settings in
".kde/share/config/kmixrc" which may be relevant to your case.
Good luck,

Yes, but I don't have a clue how I did it. IIRC, the KMix panel would open every time I launched KDE. I think it had something to do with me loading the program from the menu rather than in the system tray icon thingy. Ever since about November, the app has started as expected in the system tray without showing anything. I believe there are no settings for this. I pretty much don't touch it these days, for fear of screwing it up. Kind of like how I never touch KLineaKConfig for fear of losing my green OSD bar. -- kai - www.perfectreign.com www.livebeans.com - the new NetBeans community 43...for those who require slightly more than the answer to life, the universe and everything.
