Jerry,
I had the same problem and same results, until I also noted that Anders mentioned "/dev/sg*". I suppose that is the SCSI emulation related to the IDE CDROM? Anyway, after I also changed the permission on sg0, it worked for OGGs nicely, although MP3 is yet to happen (I can't seem to get all of the Lame things proper). Many thanks to Anders! Mike
Hi Mike! When I added a+rw to /dev/sg0 everything worked. I've tried mp3, mov, and ogg. They all work nicely. I am going to stick with ogg. I downloaded lame-libs-3.89-1.i386.rpm and installed it as root with yast. Two lib files appeared in /usr/lib, the first a link to the second. /usr/lib/libmp3lame.so.0 ---> /usr/lib/libmp3lame.so.0.0.0 Also, I made sure I was in the group 'disk' and that /media and subdirs were root:disk with a+rw. Roger that, Ming-Che. I have the same error, and I am also using ide-scsi emulation. As I excitedly look for MP3s to magically appear when I insert an audio CD-ROM, all I get is "Couldn't read /". Alas.
This subject has been here two or three times before. The solution is to set proper permissions on /dev/sg* (i.e. sg0, sg1 or whichever your ide-scsi is using), and if it still doesn't work and you have liblame installed, upgrade to the latest liblame. Older versions cause audiocd to segfault

I hate to bring this up again, but.... I've checked the archives on the Nov 5th exchange and followed the advice therein.
I have an IDE PlexStor 8432 CDRW under scsi emulation (hdd > /dev/sr0)
My CDROM has and does play nicely and I can burn CDs nicely.
My /dev/cdrom --> /dev/sr0 link is owned by root:disk with a+rw permissions. Root:disk also owns /cdrom, /cdrecorder, /media and all subdir under it. All have a+rw permissions.
I have installed lame-libs-3.89-1.i386.rpm it it gave the following:
/usr/lib/libmp3lame.so.0 ---> /usr/lib/libmp3lame.so.0.0.0 I see no other lame libs in /.usr/lib.
BUT, the AudioCD service in Konqueror STILL returns "Can't find /"
What other magic encantations are required? Jerry
