This feature might have been in KDE earlier but since I am now using version 2.2.2 I cannot check if it was there before. Apparently, KDE is now a CD ripper and it can convert CD tracks on the fly to Ogg Vorbis AND with the correct library installed it can convert CD tracks on the fly to mp3 files! To activate the conversion to mp3, I had to download the lame-libs RPM. At least in version 7.2, SuSE does not ship this library. I found it on rpmfind. This installs the libmp3lame.so library which KDE needs. Now open a konqueror file browser, click on the services pseudo directory in the directory tree on the left (if you have the extended sidebar showing). Click on the Audio CD Browser and you will see a MP3 directory. Drag a file from that directory into a directory you have write privileges to and the file will be copied and converted on the fly! You can control the MP3 conversion settings (bit rate, etc.) from the KDE Control Center>Sound>Audiocd IO Slave>MP3 Settings. Makes life so much easier. No need for all the mp3 tools I had to use before. If they only allowed editing the ID3 tags by modifying the properties of the mp3 file it would have been perfect. Nope - just get "Couldn't read /". Kevin
Works great here. I already ripped and converted into MP3 about 15 CDs
using this method.

This subject has been here two or three times before. The solution is to set proper permissions on /dev/sg* (i.e. sg0, sg1 or whichever your ide-scsi is using), and if it still doesn't work and you have liblame installed, upgrade to the latest liblame. Older versions cause audiocd to segfault regards Anders

Sorry, Anders - I obviously don't know what I'm talking about! Your advice was enough to get it working. For others, the steps are as follows (this is on a stock 7.3 install, with an ordinary IDE CD-drive, no ide-scsi in effect): 1. Find out the device to which your CD-drive points - in my case, this was /dev/hdc. 2. As root, run: chmod 777 /dev/hdc (This opens up access to the drive entirely, which may not be advisable in all cases). 3. Go to rpmfind.net, and search for libmp3lame. Download lame-libs-3.89-1.i386.rpm. Use YaST or the console to install this. (You do not need to do this if you are going to use ogg format - the existing setup will rip the tracks as oggs without anything further. However, sw as supplied with earlier SuSE versions (eg 7.2) seems to have difficulties playing oggs - noatun segfaults, and xmms just sits there.) 4. Put a CD in the drive, and open Konq. Under Services, click on Audio CD Browser. Go to the MP3 folder, and select the track(s) you want to rip. Drag them to, eg, the desktop. The track will be ripped into an mp3. 5. As Avi said, "you can control the MP3 conversion settings (bit rate, etc.) from the KDE Control Center>Sound>Audiocd IO Slave>MP3 Settings." Thanks again Anders. This is obviously a candidate for Togan's FAQ. Kevin

I hate to bring this up again, but.... I've checked the archives on the Nov 5th exchange and followed the advice therein. I have an IDE PlexStor 8432 CDRW under scsi emulation (hdd > /dev/sr0) My CDROM has and does play nicely and I can burn CDs nicely. My /dev/cdrom --> /dev/sr0 link is owned by root:disk with a+rw permissions. Root:disk also owns /cdrom, /cdrecorder, /media and all subdir under it. All have a+rw permissions. I have installed lame-libs-3.89-1.i386.rpm it it gave the following: /usr/lib/libmp3lame.so.0 ---> /usr/lib/libmp3lame.so.0.0.0 I see no other lame libs in /.usr/lib. BUT, the AudioCD service in Konqueror STILL returns "Can't find /" What other magic encantations are required? Jerry

As Anders said, you need to put group write permission (assuming user is
member of group disk) on to /dev/sg0[1,2,whatever]. [NOTE: sg NOT sr!]
So the trick is, even if your ide-scsi presents the CD-R as /dev/sr0 (like
mine does) you still want to set root:disk write permission on /dev/sg0.
It's quirky I know but that does work (if you *do* have all the requisite
lame stuff).
Good luck.

What other magic encantations are required? JerryI am a member of group 'disk'. But, the device is sr0 NOT sg0. SuSE did not call 'modprobe sg' XCD-Roast uses sr0, the various CD audio players use sr0, xmcd plays audio CDs via /dev/sr0.
As Anders said, you need to put group write permission (assuming user is member of group disk) on to /dev/sg0[1,2,whatever]. [NOTE: sg NOT sr!]
Strange..... XCD-Roast, KDonCD, xmcd, and every other CD device I've tried, except Audio-CD service, uses /dev/sr0
So the trick is, even if your ide-scsi presents the CD-R as /dev/sr0 (like mine does) you still want to set root:disk write permission on /dev/sg0.
Well, even though it makes NO sense at all, I did add a+rw to /dev/sg0 and THAT FIXED IT. AudioCD Service Works now! Thanks Tim!!, Jerry

sg is the generic scsi interface. It's a Sun invention IINM. cdrecord uses it, which should mean that xcdroast and koncd also do, since they're just frontends to cdrecord. I think the idea behind sg is to have a device you can use whether the real device is a cd-recorder (sr) a cd player (scd), a tape (st) or whatever //Anders
Jerry, I had the same problem and same results, until I also noted that Anders mentioned "/dev/sg*". I suppose that is the SCSI emulation related to the IDE CDROM? Anyway, after I also changed the permission on sg0, it worked for OGGs nicely, although MP3 is yet to happen (I can't seem to get all of the Lame things proper). Many thanks to Anders! Hi Mike! When I added a+rw to /dev/sg0 everything worked. I've tried mp3, mov, and ogg. They all work nicely. I am going to stick with ogg. I downloaded lame-libs-3.89-1.i386.rpm and installed it as root with yast. Two lib files appeared in /usr/lib, the first a link to the second. /usr/lib/libmp3lame.so.0 ---> /usr/lib/libmp3lame.so.0.0.0 Also, I made sure I was in the group 'disk' and that /media and subdirs were root:disk with a+rw. I've had the same problems as a lot of others regarding this issue. I found that I could use audiocd:/ as root but not as a user, which suggested a permission problem. In the audiocd FAQ, I found the command cdparanoia -vsQ, which will scan all devices for a suitable cd drive. Running this as root with an audio cd in the drive will result in a track list. This will be preceded with the device that was found that accesses the cd, which in my case was /dev/sg1. So if the permissions on this device are correct everything should work. Hope this helps Steve

Have you checked the permissions on the CD device?
