When using ALICE for the installation, it says as follows,

You may leave fields off, but # the colons are required. <password> MUST be EN-CRYPTED by YOU, the script # doesnŽt do this for good reasons. Again: donŽt put unen-crypted passwords
As someone being never made a manual useradd action I have two questions :
1) Can I define the homedir as main.server:/homedir
No, the entry in here must be an absolute path. If you want use home directories on an NFS server, add the mount entry to /etc/fstab instead and use this path in here.
2) Regarding the password encryption how do I make it ? Is it some gurbage that I type in or is there am utility to create it for me to use
Not sure about this one - you might be able to use "htpasswd" from the apache package for this.
