Thank you. Subsequent to my last post, I did find it; but, why is it so difficult to answer such questions?
Given a need for a package, what is the canonical suse way to find that package?
You have two files. they are in the root of either the DVD, CD1 or the ftp directory. INDEX.gz contains a list of all packages in the distribution together with their location; search that if you know the name of the package you're looking for. ARCHIVES.gz contains all packages as well, but together with the constituent files and descriptions; search that if you know the name of a file you're looking for, but don't know the package, or if you don't know either but have a term that may be in the package description.
Sloughing through the ftp site, not knowing in which directory to look and without a search mechanism, this is very tedious work.
There must exist away to answer my original question via some sort of rpm query -- right?
AFAIK you can only use rpm querys for packages you already have installed. //Anders
