Jim, I would like to be giving you a better answer than this, but I think you may just have an incompatible cdrw drive. Mitsumi does not support Linux and will not offer any help. I know some here have gotten some models to work with Linux, but most will not. I remember going thru the same thing when trying two different models of Mitsumi drives. I exchanged them for some Acer drives and have been happy since. As with VCRs, so it is with cd drives as well. There are only about 3 actual makers of the drives in the world and of course many use their own brand name over the makers. My suggestion to you is to try another cdrw, if possible or take that one back and exchange it for a different type/model/brand.
