What is this mysterious TIOCGDEV message anyway? I'm getting it on every bootup and don't know how to turn it off. Could you please provide more details on this matter.
TIOCGDEV is a kernel patch that was originally part of Joerg Prante's kernel patchset. It is used in SuSE kernels to enable SuSE style boot logging. So if you use a vanilla kernel, you will need this to enable it.
