I've tried everything I can think of in all sorts of ways and I still cannot get 3D running on my Linux 8.2 system I bought two weeks ago. SuSE tech support doesn't want to deal with it and will NOT even give me over to PAID support so I can get this problem solved.
It appears this stuff is just not compatible with my Compaq 6029US and my ATI All In Wonder 8500 card.
WindowsXP I got running in one evening. It has been two solid weeks and I still cant get this Linux crap to work properly.
If you think I'm going to waste money on any more SuSE products, you gotta be outta your mind.
You could have just gone here.. http://www.ati.com/ After the 7xxx series ATI decided to take a tip from nVidia and release binary ONLY drivers for it's cards and not help the open source community out with specs so it could write it's own drivers. While I've heard tale of people writing open source drivers for these cards I do not know if they work or where to find them. I found this by opening Mozilla and typing ati in the url bar. Then when at the ATI site I clicked on the "DRIVERS & SOFTWARE" button at the top. Then it goes something like this... 1. 3 large boxes appear with the first one filled with OS choices (oh my) 2. Click Linux 3. 3 large boxes are there and two are filled. The second now with choices " Graphics Drivers, FireGL or Mobile " 4. Clicked on Graphics Drivers then to my surprise (not) a choice of "RADEON 8500 series" was in the list and they wanted me to click go of all things. 5. This appears along with downloads for drivers which SuSE won't ship because they are "proprietary" and ATI doesn't let them do it.
From the website...tada!
Instructions: 1. Before you start, please read these installation tips. 2. If you are not sure which version of XFree86 you have installed, please download and run Check.sh from a command line to find out. 3. Installing a new driver is only recommended if you are having issues with your ATI product, including those mentioned in the "Fixed in this driver Since Microsoft and ATI have a relationship in which they cooperate *cough*make money off each other*cough* then of course things will be easier with XP. And if ATI gave as much care to Linux as they use to do then you wouldn't have any issue either. But they don't and with as little information as you gave in your email about what you actually did to get this up and working. I feel no sympathy for you. After 6+ years on this list helping tons of people who have come, gone and stayed. I'm just sick of people who expect everything to just be SO very easy and when it's not ..instead of just asking some questions they start talking trash like " XP (insert Windows flavor here) is so much easier then this Linux shit...blah..blah..blah.." That for the most part I don't care if you buy, copy or download anymore "crap"... I guess you have a choice if you want to avoid the ease at which worms, trojan's and virus's invade Windows..either buy a Mac or please quit whining at let us help you. I found the information on the ATI drivers for your card with in 20 seconds of reading this little rant about how great XP is and how much SuSE sucks. We don't need any of that crap here and after years of being on this list..it's simply bad etiquette to spew this here after not really appearing to give or ask for help. Do whatever you like in the future. You can stay and let us help or take that troll baiting "XP is easier" crap walking. It's up to you. I personally hope you'll calm down an stick around. :) BTW. Per ATI..the open source driver doesn't do 3D ..only with their binary only driver can you achieve 3D graphics. So you would have to go this route anyway.
