In all of these configurations my rectangular images (powerpoints, .jpgs, etc). are squished into squares. [...]
Please have a look at the actual dimensions: They hardly change! And they do never match the resolution you have tried to set up. For me, this looks like bug https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=257746 Can you check which driver you are using for your i845? Just paste the output from "hwinfo --gfxcard" as root.
