There are generally quite a few people on this list that watch a thread with interest with no need to comment, so replying to the list for that is good.
However if I ask a question and see a reply directly to me, as well as the list, I know it's specifically towards my question which I like as it's easier to spot these in the middle of the 100+ e-mails per day I receive on this list.
Interestingly, you are using a software that is not "thread aware" (it erases In-Reply-To and References headers): X-Mailer: Novell GroupWise Internet Agent 6.5.4 If your software was thread-aware, you would see emails sent in answer to you directly below your email, threaded, and you would not need direct replies ;-) In any case, I sort them to another mailbox, they don't bother me.
There are many list 'standards' that people will always find annoying, such as the 'reply to all' and 'top or bottom post' but ultimately I find that 'just getting on with it' is the best policy, and not adding something else to worry about in your life is generally a better, and less stressful way of going about day-to-day affairs.
