However, this is not really the crux of the problem.
I think the problem is that sig *are* allowed in posts to the openSUSE lists - and this is particularly unwholesome because there are no rules governing what they may contain. Well, yes there is Basil - whatever rules and conventions we apply to what you write are also applied to your sig.
But the "rules and conventions" are nothing more than "rules and conventions" and are not set in stone: they are simply guidelines which are subject to peer pressure to be "enforced". And to be "enforced" by whom? By one person who is persuaded to enforce them if he is lobbied to do so by some unknown person or persons and if he is in the mood to act. In other words, the process is simply SUBJECTIVE. Patrick thinks that mentioning something to do with Nazi get his knickers in a knot. Someone thinks that mentioning Muslims gets their noses out of joint. Someone thinks that mentioning Jews is anti-semetic and has coronary palpitations. Someone thinks that having advertisements promoting their business is wrong and has a fainiting spell. And the list goes on..........
Any control as to what they may contain is thrown open to "peer pressure" whereby some wanker(s) may complain about something written, and Henne then comes in and bans a person.
As you will recall, Fred was banned from the lists because some wanker(s) complained about his sig. Actually, IIRC, he was banned because he was being a stubborn, pig headed fool.
I remember the case very well. And I agreed with the decision at the time because when you enter someone's house you abide by the "rules" of that household. And what I will now state is that Fred and I correspond regularly so what I said at the time I stand by without qualificatins and which I told him personally. And this is exactly what I am now arguing about. The "rules" are subject to SUBJECTIVE rules, depending who may be offended by what is written under those "rules". If you make the rule that *NO* sigs are to be used then nobody can be offended by them as there are none to be read/seen. Then the only area of contention which people could complain about would be the CONTENTS of posts themselves - and not the sigs attached at the end of the texts of the posts.
