I use Plasma & XFCE depending on the booted distro and most non-KDE apps konform at least to some extent with the KDE desktop when KDE is used examples being Pan, Sylpheed, gftp and even nedit. The ONE set that is almost always problematic is anything Mozilla, Firefox in this particular case. I cannot change the title bar from black which just makes it impossible to distinguish from darker wallpapers, there being no way to select something with a contrasting window border either. How can I fix this?

Missing window frames on XFCE after update

Hi, I had to shutdown my machine due to impending power outage. Clever me I figured I'd update before shutdown to pick up whatever was new. Well, whatever is new since my last update on openSUSE Leap 15.5 messed up my XFCE settings. When I start a new application there are no window frames and everything starts in the upper left hand corner. Alt-Tab is not working to switch between apps Since there are no window frames I cannot move windows around. And there is only 1 workspace, albeit the workspace settings dialog shows that there should be 4, which is what I had setup prior to system shutdown. Any ideas? [opensuse] Project management software question for project managers

I am looking for project management software I can install on my Suse box. Alas, there are quite a number of prducts that claim to be suitable project management products, but I am hoping to obtain a little help separating the wheat from the chaffe. Basically, when I open the project management software, I want to be able to choose from among a number of projects that are under way, and then see the relation between a client's wish list and the functional requirements specs, and then how these specs relate to the UML diagrams that have been created, and from there, what tasks have been defined for each requirement and the identity of all persons involved, the developers and their managers, and the person who designed the code that supports the requirement. And with that, I want to be able to see the project's timeline, the related bugs, &c. I would even want to be able to open the source code files and examine the code that was actually written. Here is my wish list: 1) a web application that stores data in either PostgreSQL or MySQL. 2) easy integration with UML tool (or has it's own UML tool that supports round trip engineering) 3) resource management (e.g. computers, and development tools, that can be used, personelle assigned to each task) 4) documentation of relation between functional requirements specs to specific tasks and specific unit and integration tests. 5) time/effort tracking 6) bug tracking, including data relating the existance of the bug, and effort required to fix it, to the person who wrote the original code, the person who supervised him or her, and the person who designed the 'feature' in question, the time taken to complete the original task, and the technologies used (to imprrove accountability as well as to determine retraining and continuing education needs (people aren't disposable, so instead of taking a harsh aproach to problems identified, I prefer to use education as a corrective, but I can't design corrective instruction without knowing precisely what the need is). I also need to know if a developer has a higher than normal bug rate simply because he doesn't take enough time to ensure the job is done right, or because I haven't adequately trained him, or because of a poor choice of tools, or somethng else that may be my fault. 7) use of task effort tracking history to generate provisional effort/cost estimates from new project's functional requirements 8) easy integration with open source ERP products like OFBiz (which may make trakcing resources and manpower easier, as well as connect real production data to the enterprise's accounting systems) 9) easy integration with CMS products, like Wordpress (especally for production documentation, includng degin documentation and user guides and reference manuals) 10) easy integration with verion control systems such as subversion. If there is a decent product that supports all of this, great (and language used to implement it doesn't matter), but if I have to write code to add missing requirements, then I am limited to those implemented using Perl or Java (and running on Tomcat). I don't know PHP well enough, and I don't know Ruby at all; and I really don't want to think about implementing this sort of thing in C++ (though I could if absolutely necessary). If you have project management experience, and use tools that are available for Suse Linux, what software product(s) did you use, and with what result? While I await relies, I will continue to review web documentation for those products I have found so far, to see if any of them are a) suitable for use in production and b) to see to what extent they support the features I am after. I have seen a number of products so far in my search, that deserve to be nameless, because they provide no way to relate cost estimates to one's team's track record, or to the details of the design, and seem satisfied with production of a pretty gantt chart (which is why I have formed the view that there is a whole lots of chaffe in the set of applications that call themselves project menement software - I have yet to find anything that really has the potential of being labelled wheat). [SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. No Login, no Graphics after update to Tumbleweed 20230211-0

Hello, after the update the screen only shows a '-'. All the usual other tty screens that you get with e.g. STRG-ALT-F1 are also gone. I can connect to the PC via ssh from my Ubuntu Laptop and check what is going on. I am using an old GTX 570 on that PC. Previously when the G06 stuff was installed instead of updating the needed G04 stuff, I was able to install NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-390.157.run manually and the login and XFCE worked. But now even that fails. :-( Any pointers? Is that the beginning of the things that are named in Subject "Nvidia 390x driver users - glibc 2.37 will bring bad news" ? chromium and h.264 codec in 15.5

Hi, I'm a little confused about the h.264 codec and chromium in 15.5. I can play the video from https://html5videoplayer.net/html5video/mp4-h-264-video-test/ in both chromium-119.0.6045.199-bp155.1917.5.x86_64 and firefox-esr-115.6.0-lp155.1.1.x86_64. But when I try to join a webex meeting with chromium, it tells me "Video and shared content not supported by browser settings Activate the H.264 video codec in your browser settings so people can see your video and shared content and you can see other videos and shared content." Firefox works fine. chromium also says "not supported" on https://mozilla.github.io/webrtc-landing/pc_test_no_h264.html while Firefox says "supported". I've installed chromium-ffmpeg-extra from packman and added rpms from http://codecs.opensuse.org/openh264/openSUSE_Leap/x86_64/ but it doesn't change anything. Slowroll repos and updating

I load a fresh Tumbleweed, go into Yast and delete every single repo. Then I 'begin' the routine linked here and quoted below... https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Slowroll rm /etc/zypp/repos.d/* ...which in essence dumps any existing repo but when I reload Yast they're all back there! If I then continue with the ritual I end up with 14 mostly TW repos and trying to do 'zyopper up' get me a warning about tumbleweed needing 'zypper dup'. As for 'zypper up', it will use 14 repos, mostly Tumbleweed! cups 2 printersetup for one printer

Hi, since years i use 2 (or more) printer setups in cups to use one printer. -> for different "standard" settings lets say its a color printer, but to save money often i like to print black and white. so i define a printer with the a ppd file and same printer adress twice, one with color settings one with settings black and white. so i have not to click and search all the printer settings to set up this 2 main settings. instead if i like to print color, i use the "color printer, or the foto-setting-printer or the black-and-white printer. since years i have used this with different printers "hp" and "qms" was working. since about a year i own a "sharp mx3060" i do not know if cups has changed anything or if its the printer. but it did not work any more. i have 2 stored ppd's inside etc/cups/ppd/... Attempting to Hibernate, powercycles machine instead::

Hello, A question for you is that currently attempting to 'Hibernate' (tried twice), the machine goes through the process...halts/poweroff *completely* for about a second. All signs of PSU and display features turn off.... then suddenly powers up at bios menu. After entering the LUKS passphrase some boot information is displayed. pertaining to the prior "Hibernate" attempt (I believe). strange problem with BT in KDE Plasma: bluez claims "file transfer succeded" but does not save, now does not even connect. Seems broken.

Connecting from my smartphone with BT to bluez, I can send files with "share", the BT bluez of my PC says transfer running, transfer succeeded, but the it claims "cannot save files" and now file is saved indeed. I have no explanation, the directory is the home directory of the user with a dedicated BT download directory, I checked permissions and did chmod on it to make sure all files and the directory have the correct permissions. That was yesterday, now it is even worse (yesterday I detached and reattached the BT dongle) so it shows connected, even the battery remaining on the smartphone but.... the sending process remains 0 and no notice in KDE appears. After a while it interrupts. No idea why it did not save yesterday, why it does not receive the files today...... Does anybody has and Android smartphone and tried to use BT file transfer on KDE Plasma to tell me if it is known to be broken?

Hi, this machine is running openSUSE Tumbleweed KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.10 KDE Frameworks Verison: 5.115.0 Qt Version: 5.15.12 Kernel Version: 6.76.6-1-pae Graphics Platform: X11 Graphics Processor: i915 Having some shading issues with KDE Plasma so I created file kwin.sh in /etc/profile.d Permissions are --> -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 26 FEB 29 13:54 kwin.sh I added 'QT_QUICK_BACKEND=software' in order to attempt to software render QT Quick because OpenGL backend uses complex shaders which do not fit into i915 hardware specifications. There is no luck with this modification as of yet. Is it a security issue to add 'x/execute' permission to the file? None of the other files in profile.d have execute permissions set as of now default. Any thoughts on what is going on here with this?

ssh on LAN 1st steps

I'm trying to get my feet wet for file transfers between home computers on my router, windows and mac later, for now only tw and slowroll. from desktop: ~ ping laptop-IP good ping from both ~ ssh localhost ssh: connect to host localhost port 22: Connection refused on laptop: # firewall-cmd --add-port=22/tcp success from desktop: ~ ssh laptop-IP ssh: connect to host laptop-IP port 22: Connection refused I guess there's no pint in IP's while even localhost is refusing BTW, if w=and when I get going what kind of trasfer speeds can I expect? Recommendations for firewall/router hardware?

I need to configure a firewall/router box for a medium-sized office/factory, projected to grow up to 50 people over the next 5 years. The last time I did this I built a small rack-mount server box, small enough not to need case fans, with extra RAM (for the day), an onboard NIC for the external network and a 4-port 10/100 NIC for the internal subnets. HP PS/2 style keyboard preventing suspend:

I have openSUSE Tumbleweed running on this machine. I had attached a USB wireless HP keyboard to the machine and suspend worked well from what I could tell (the machine went to sleep and resumed when asked). The issue is the keyboard is/was not taking keystrokes correctly, quite alot of the time. It became very very frustrating for me to use. It seems sometimes freshly charged Panasonic Eneloop batteries may help a little but is unknown for certain still. When an older HP PS/2 style keyboard is attached to the machine. Yes, suspend does shut off the monitor but it leaves the machine in a running state (power supply fan still spinning). I have investigated the bios settings and can not find anything pertaining to the PS/2 style keyboard in there. There is a feature option in the machines bios for PS/2 style mouse though. What can I do to try to get the sleep/suspend feature to work correctly with the PS/2 style keyboard attached now? Suspend working normally on this setup is machine goes into a sleep state, quiet, with flashing power button. Resume activates by pressing the power button. As I do not have hibernation configured. Is this somehow related something 'udevadm' would help track down at all? -Best Wishes

X Authority files not always installed or updated apparently

Hello - I am trying to grok how two X authority files get created and who/what is responsible for creating them. I have a script for starting up the x11vnc service and it needs to find the X authority file and looks for it in one of two places. The first location it looks for it is at /run/user/1000/xauth_* and if my script finds it there then my script assumes it is running on an OpenSuSE 15.4 or later system and I use it for/via the -auth parameter of x11vnc command and the x11vnc service can be started up OK. If my script does not find the X authority file at this first location then it assumes that it is running on OpenSuSE 15.3 or earlier and looks for the X authority file at ~/.Xauthority. And again (ASSUMING my script is running on an OpenSuSE 15.3 or earlier system) if my script finds it there it passes the location of the .Xauthority file to x11vnc via the -auth parameter and the xvncserver will start up an run OK. I get that feeling because if I delete the .Xauthority file (as some internet searches suggested) it is not recreated when I rebooted or log out, log back in. This application failed to start because no Qt platform plugin could be initialized. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem. Crud! don't know how to solve this, maybe "plasmashell ---version" does not work over SSH? Let me know what other info is needed. Please let me know how to create the /run/user/1000/xauth_* X authority file on those systems that are not doing so and thanks as always in advance.... Marc... NetworkManager problem in TW

While using Slowroll I set up NetworkManager to connect to my smartphone hot-spot (my ONLY internet connection for the next 2-3 months!). Everything works as expected and I'm posting thois from Slowroll, with these settings (all else being defaults): General config tab: "Connect automatically with priority 0" Wifi tab: shows SSID name with padlock WiFi Security tab: Wpa2 personal password shows on clicking eye "Store pwd for all users (not encrypted) But using the same settings in TW all I get is "Connected but unable to reach the internet" or words to that effect. That's a relatively recent install and there is no other internet connection so I need to fix *it* first. Which files does this dialog edit? Maybe I should compare them. What else can I look at?

I was reading about proposed changes to RFC 6724 which determines the priority for IP address selection. In the original RFC 6724, IPv4 addresses are given preference to IPv6 Unique Local Addresses (ULA). The proposed changes would reverse that. However, in testing with ping, I see ULA is preferred, except for the computer being used for testing from. That is when a computer is pinging itself. Why the difference? Why is the proposed priority used when pinging a different device, but not the same device? Also, if I use the FQDN, instead of just the host name, then ULA is used. WTF??? I'm using the DNS resolver in pfSense. Is chmod broken?

I ran into a problem in OpenSuSE 15.5 trying to start the cron.service daemon. It failed because the directory at /etc/cron.d was empty (which in previous releases of OpenSuSE it was not empty). The cron.service file, as supplied from the installation repos, has a couple of ExecStartPre shell commands shown here - (the second ExecStartPre command seems to be redundant, but I don't know that for sure, because I don't know how chmod is suppose to handle recursion and wildchars. Man pages seem unclear about this). ExecStartPre=+/bin/sh -c '/bin/chmod -R 0744 /etc/cron.*' # Only do the following ExecStartPre if there is something in /etc/cron.d ExecStartPre=+/bin/sh -c '/bin/chmod -R 0644 /etc/cron.d/*' Even commenting out the second ExecStartPre command doesn't solve the failure I was getting from the first chmod command. Anywise I managed to fix this issue by using the following ExecStartPre commands instead - ExecStartPre=+/bin/sh -c '/bin/chmod 0744 /etc/cron.*' ExecStartPre=+/bin/sh -c '/bin/chmod -R 0744 /etc/cron.*/*' So, is the script in cron.service wrong/broken or is chmod itself broken? (or maybe my version of OpenSuSE 15.5 is screwed up somehow? won't be the first thing to have gone wrong with it on my new laptop! sigh) Marc...

My government tax department (UK HMRC) has sent me a PDF form to complete. It is designed to be completed on screen, and then printed, but okular does not offer editing controls to complete the form. I have used okular to complete other pdf forms on this computer so I think the problem is with the form. My system is Tumbleweed + KDE. Can anyone recommend an alternative PDF viewer to try? My 3 or 4 KDE-employing systems all use xeyes as the mouse-arrow locating utility since an earlier one called mouse-trails died out in the 4.x epoch. Gotta have something like this with 1920+ resolution. https://imgur.com/1ADm9h8.png {OT: wallpaper is my snow-removal log, clearly shows warming} To get the eyes there I drop links into a remote 'bashers-linked' folder that contains links to bash scripts such as my-xeyes.bsh elsewhere, the .profile file is also a link to a common remote .profile file with lines such as these in it: cd 0/bashers-linked bash my-xeyes-launch.bsh The reason I link is to protect the folder of real scripts :-) I use this system in TW, Slowroll, Artix and maybe annother KDE setup (about half use KDE, the other half XFCE). There have been issues needing fixing from tiome to time, the latest one is that booting TW erases the links. I'd like to trap the culprit but don't really know how, but it is a PITA. While on TW, the reason I cited the exception for kernel 6.7.2 is that while that appears in the grub2 boot menu, selecting it results in a boot to command-line only.

I am still getting a bunch of these errors on zypper dup. They are all related to the new rpm. I usually choose to keep the obselete version. Am I picking the wrong one ? Hi, since a couple of weeks always when i try to shutdown my tumbleweed (not actual updated, so an update is not the case of the problem) a delay for the shutdown: "a stop job is running for session 3 of user simon" i am user "simon" and i have before closed kde regularly with the shut down option and nothing left open. its a "normal" desktop kde system, with connections to and from it, inside the lan over nfs and sometimes over ssh. but the most times 3 tumbleweed computers who are running inside this lan who have theoretically access, i and my wife are the operators, so nobody should have "logged in" when i shut down. from outside the internet there should be nothing open to come in to the lan. how could i investigate what is here "session3" and still running? thanks, simoN -- www.becherer.de

Problems with Leap 15.5 KDE

In addition to the "shaking" video problem I mentioned earlier, there is another severe problem. After 2 or 3 days, my desktop will lock up solid and the only way out is to kill the power. It is only the desktop that locks up, as I can still use SSH to connect and do stuff. After a few lockups, I went back to 15.4 and both these issues stopped. I then returned to 15.5 a few days ago and both problems returned. If there is no resolution soon, I will be forced to return to 15.4 again. Since that hardware module is no longer in Yast, I can't use it to provide hardware info, so I can only read from the box. The motherboard is a Gigabyte H77M-D3M with an i7 CPU.

Also I would like to ask you about all this information about COW and Btrfs. What's going on here with 'defragmenting' and 'scrubbing' in a generalized sense? What is a sign of the need for it? I've been experiencing a minor freeze for about 45 seconds to a minute after a powercycle and login but then things seem to clear up.
