[opensuse] NTP precision in openSUSE

One thing I've wondered about is the precision of the time displayed in openSUSE. I connect a stratum 1 NTP server and also have a clock that receives time from WWVB. Sometimes there seems to be a slight difference in the displayed time between the two. I suspect the clock may be less precise, as I bought it from Radio Shack several years ago and it wasn't that expensive. Has anyone looked into the display precision on Linux? Of course, the accuracy should be identical on both, as they are both traceable back to International Atomic Time. [opensuse] Idea / Help needed: /boot is too small, how do I resize a bog standard partition with filesystem?

Hi, (this is on 15.2) today's kernel update barfed on me, "package kernel-xxxx needs YY MB on /boot". I managed to install the update by manually moving the old kernel images to /tmp, installing the update rpm, and then moving them back, but for obvious reasons I don't want to have to do that with every kernel update, so here's the plea for inspiration: how can I resize /dev/sda1 and the filesystem on it, without loosing anythign on my system? The situation: /dev/sda[abcd] exist. /dev/sda1 is a bog-standard ext4, 150MB, mounted on /boot /dev/sda2 covers the rest of the disk, and is a PV for LVM /dev/sd[bcd]1 all exist, span their whole disks, and are PVs in the same VG as /dev/sda2 I have enough room to do a pvmove from /dev/sda2 to anywhere else if i resize a few of the volumes in my VG, so getting to the point where /dev/sda1 is all that's left on /dev/sda should be easy enough, but I've never resized a normal partition - learned about LVM too early in my career ;) How do I resize a normal partition and the filesystem on it? Like I already said, filesystem is ext4. Two new 15.2 installations - systemd automount seems to have stopped working ? [opensuse] 15.2 kernel update today - devel, source and syms not updated from 5.3.18-19?

All, Any reason anyone can think of that a zypper up on 15.2 would not have updated the installed: kernel-default-devel 5.3.18-lp152.20.7.1 kernel-devel 5.3.18-lp152.20.7.1 kernel-preempt-devel 5.3.18-lp152.20.7.1 kernel-source 5.3.18-lp152.20.7.1 kernel-syms 5.3.18-lp152.20.7.1 Following update I had to go back and manually install the devel files and source so the VBox 52.2.42 modules would build correctly. After the original zypper up, the dkms ran correctly attempting to build the modules, but since the needed kernel packages were not pulled in on update, it didn't succeed. I don't recall ever having some kernel packages update without zypper checking and updating all kernel packages on the system. Any ideas? -- David C. [opensuse] FYI: networkmanager 1.24.2 disables wake on lan unless you tell it otherwise.

Hi, to whom it might be of interest: NetworkManager 1.24.2 (for example, from the OBS Gnome repos) disables wake- on-lan unless you configure the connection differently. nmcli con mod eth0 802-3-ethernet.wake-on-lan magic restores proper behaviour. [opensuse] Leap 15.2 and group vboxusers

A fresh installation from DVD of Leap 15.2 from the official image released on 2 July but dated 26 June in the mirrors. KDE Plasma desktop. The only departure from the published 15.2 standard is the nVidia proprietary drivers installed “the hard way” to replace Nouveau. Installed VirtualBox 6.1.10. There are a number of issues, but the one I least understand is outlined below. Trying to boot a vm fails with a message that I’m not a member of the vboxusers group. The command <groups> in a terminal confirms this. This is consistent with the GUI “User and Group Management” module in YaST, which does not offer the vboxusers group as an option at all, so I can't add it using the GUI. The command <usermod -aG (group) (username)> has no effect. So it would seem that the group vboxusers isn't present. Except that trying to add group vboxusers using <groupadd> (as root) from the command line returns the message “vboxusers already exists”. And it is indeed listed in /etc/groups as vboxusers:x:461 So we have a situation where the VirtualBox installation, the command <groups> in a terminal and the YaST GUI all think the vboxusers group is missing. In direct contradiction, however, the command <groupadd> in a terminal and the content of the file /etc/groups think it does exist. That doesn't make sense, but figuring out why is well beyond my expertise. I certainly don’t know how to fix it (or even if it’s fixable). Typing "zypper up", I get this response: Loading repository data... Reading installed packages... The following 7 package updates will NOT be installed: MozillaThunderbird libfreebl3 libfreebl3-hmac libsoftokn3 libsoftokn3-hmac mozilla-nspr mozilla-nss-certs Nothing to do. It could also have told me that millions of other updates would not be installed. Why did it nominate just these seven ones?
