[opensuse] Help with Makefile patch - it fails...

Guys, One thing I'm terrible at is figuring out why a patch failed to do its thing. Here I was trying to build gnomenu and it has a patch to accommodate the ../lib64 placement of stuff on x86_64 boxes. The patch fails and creates a Makefile.rej, which looks like nothing but a patch file to me. Is there any trick to using the .rej file? How? The patch applies correctly to everything but the simple Makefile and it has got me stalled. If anyone can help, please let me know. [opensuse] sound in KDE broken....sort of

[opensuse] ssh on 11.2 - NOT

I've just installed 11.2 on a machine and can't get an ssh connection. When I installed, there was an option for firewall and below that something about ssh. I selected to disable the firewall and whatever option about ssh disappeared. Now the machine is running, I see 'connection refused' when I try to connect. ps shows no sshd process. Neither the gnome control panel nor yast has an entry for ssh that I have found, nor does the xinetd list. There appears to be no help button on the yast screen, and pressing F1 does nothing. I'll keep poking around, but can anybody tell me how to start sshd and how to find help for yast/configuration on 11.2? [opensuse] Nvidia: cloning notebook desktop to external monitor

Hello, I have a notebook and sometimes want to connect it to my bigger, external monitor. My goal is to completely clone the desktop on the notebook to the external monitor. The notebook does 1600x900 and the external monitor does 1680x1050. So far I had no luck. Once, when I started an app, the app itself was seen on the notebook and the desktop on the external screen, or vice versa..... I just want an *exact clone*. I want to see my desktop at 1600x900 on the notebook and when I plug in the external monitor i want to see my desktop at 1680x1050. [opensuse] KMail suddenly opens links with Quanta instead of Firefox

Running SLED 11 with Gnome. Using Kmail as mail client. Installed Quanta Plus 3.5.9 for web authoring. Now Kmail uses Quanta to open URL's instead of Firefos as i used to. I cant seem to find the place where Kmail stores what software to use. Gnome is set to use Firefox. -- /Rikard Johnels

Hello mates, I recently switched to linux and to be specific openSUSE :-) . I am just curious about the cool features openSUSE has (I switched to it because of the features) . So I want to know , is there some feature like a really cool login system.Like we see in movies.The one I am talking about is - when you login there is voice saying "Welcome , would you please login" after you are done it says "Thank you sir" . Please dont consider this childish :-) . It would definetly attarct some more people towards openSUSE like me. Waiting to hear from you all soon. I use a Brother MFC465cn multifunction printer for scanning, using the Filezilla scanning application. All worked well for several years since I bought the machine, until I sent my first fax message with the printer yesterday. Now an attempt to load Filezilla causes the error message: ***** Error during CMS conversion Could not open scanner ICM profile. ***** This sounds like the very act of sending a fax has concealed the internal scanning profile of the device. How can I find them again? [opensuse] Problem with acroread from konq/dolphin

I have a problem starting acroread from both Konqueror and Dolphin when clicking on a PDF icon. Acroread starts up OK, but then I get a warning window saying Error launching /home/anton/.local/share/applications/acroread.desktop Either KLauncher is not running anymore, or it failed to start the application Well it started the application :-) So I click on OK for that modal dialogue box and ... Acroread starts up again with the same file! I close acroread and now there's another modal dialogue box saying KDEInit: could not launch /usr/bin/acroread I've googled around a but but not found why this nonsense is happening. I also ave Foxit and okular as alternatives This doesn't happen with them. Is there some bad exit code from acroread? -- Be extremely subtle, even to the point of formlessness. [opensuse] Suddenly mounting and NFS Kernel Server.

I am using the same exports file I have for 3 years. I made the mistake of trying the GUI to create a NFS installation source. I removed the only difference which was the last line it added. I copied the 3 year old file back to exports. All permissions are the same. It comes up in yast with every thing looking correct. Even the exportfs without options looks right. But I can not mount any of the exported HD's/Partitions. We had a car take out our electricity pole and all our systems ran aout of power. The only times the system is taken down or rebooted is when a new kernel is installed. I have ran out of ideas to try. Here is a message from trying to mount the drive. ecom4:~ # mount /MNT0 mount.nfs: mount system call failed I have several systems ounting the exported mounts. I did a diff as folllows # exportfs >> /tmp/exported-drives-n-partitions # diff /tmp/exported-drives-n-partitions /tmp1/exported-drives-n-partitions.01dec09 No differences. The export was made after a fresh installation of openSUSE 11.1 coping back the exports file. It has worked till yesterday when I booted the system after a 4 hour power outage. Prior to the boot everything was working. Where else could I find the problem? [opensuse] rebuilding initrd?

Hi all, Having a problem with a system that will not boot. Reason: mainboard broken and disks are now used on another mainboard, with probably another chipset. It contains a /dev/md0 as root-device, but when booting from the new mobo, md0 is not available. Booting with a rescue CD I can see the raid device /dev/md0 When I do these things after booting a rescue system, it seems to me that the system is the way I want it: ==================== mount /dev/md0 /mnt, mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot, mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev mount -o bind /proc /mnt/proc mount -o bind /sys /mnt/sys chroot /mnt ==================== What command do I need to rebuild the initrd with the modules now loaded? [opensuse] Reboot to Vista does not work

Perhaps this should be a bug report, but I thought I would ask first... When I am rebooting via the KDE shutdown menu, and select Vista as my OS that I want to reboot to, it fails. The GRUB boot menu always comes up with my default openSuSE 11.2 selected, and if I am not watching it will automatically reboot back to openSuSE and not Vista, as I had selected... Have I mis-configured the boot somehow or is this a bug? Running under openSuSE11.2 and KDE 4.4.3 BTW FWIW That shutdown/reboot menu of KDE is a PITA. My normal tendency is to click on the down arrow and release the click button, expecting the menu of choices to pop open and STAY open.. Not mean simply reboot. Most menus will open and stay open when the menu pulldown button is clicked... If I want to simply reboot, clicking on the reboot button anywhere else, other than the pulldown arrow should suffice... IMHO that is... ;-) Marc..

[opensuse] IMAPS over IPv6

I've tried connecting to my mail server via IPv6. While it works fine when connecting from the computer the server is running on, I cannot connect from another computer via IPv6. It works fine using IPv4 from any computer. As I understand it, I may have to make a change in /etc/xinetd.d/imap, but I'm not sure exactly what. Any ideas? Changing flags = IPv4 to IPv6 does not appear to work. Guys, I sighted an Unidentified Filesystem Object in the filesystem root this evening and need to see if others have evidence of such a phenomena. I have a working openSuse 11.2, have hacked at the GRUB and boot process, have a mouse _and_ a touchpad working in parallel, and have a wildly functionally successful KDE4 implementation. I even have an ATI Radeon and a BroadCom Wifi working! I've been patient and open minded about the bumps along the way and worked _with_ the developers. I don't see it as "bleeding edge", certainly not when I look at the problems that exist in "legacy" commercial code that I am sometimes compelled to use. But then I'm, as you point out, looking at things in a broader, more open perspective, and have seen how things have changed and developed and expect them to continue to do so: change being the one constant. I don't hark back to some "golden age" (KDE3?) or bemoan its passing. There are some people on this list a lot older than me and who must have seen (and used) a lot of "history". I note that they don't talk down KDE4 either. Perhaps the "historical perspective" that you bemoan is important when it comes to Getting Things Done. [opensuse] How to avoid using menu sections with YaST Bootloader

When I use YaST to set up my boot loader, I noted that is uses the menu section to define how to boot up previous versions of openSuSE. This is resulting in a chain of menus, each leading to the menu list for the previous version of SuSE, which is a PITA when trying to boot up an old version of openSuSE... Is there any way to tell YaST not to use menu sections when it proposes a merge with other existing GRUB bootloaders? Marc...

listmates, I am having difficulty installing a couple of kernels on 11.0 i586. I have installed them on my x86_64 box without any problems. I've been fighting it for a few hours and now need to cry for help... so... Help Please! I have installed: kernel-pae-2.6.32.11-1.1.i586.rpm kernel-pae-base-2.6.32.11-1.1.i586.rpm kernel-pae-devel-2.6.32.11-1.1.i586.rpm kernel-source-2.6.32.11-1.1.noarch.rpm From: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/hennichodernich:/backport-s… kernel-pae-2.6.31.12-2.1.i586.rpm is also available from http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/hennichodernich:/backport-s… I did the same thing on my x86_64 box and the kernel booted just fine. (FYI both kernels work very well on 11.0, so you have a good upgrade path to 2.6.31 or 2.6.32 available) On boot the i586 system goes through the grub menu and I select the kernel to boot, and everything looks normal until it goes to mount the root partition. It then give the error similar to: waiting on mandatory device: /dev/disk/by-id/ata-Hitachi_HTS541616J9AT00_SB044DCJEJS1BH-part2................... Then it asks to try the fallback device: /dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_Hitachi_HTS5416_SB044DCJEJS1BH-part2 (new kernel uses the 'ata-Hitachi-blahblah' 2.6.25.20-0.7 uses 'scsi-SATA_Hitachi-blahblah') The problem is that apparently there are no modules compiled into the initrd so it can't mount the ext3 partitions. I know it is a modules issue, because it couldn't even mount my usb-stick, giving the error: unknown filesystem type 'vfat'. To me it seems like a 'chicken and the egg problem'. You need the modules.dep file from the /lib/modules/<newkernel>, but you can't create it with depmod -a until you boot the kernel. (I know this is done all the time, but I can deduce where in the process this takes place) If you wait until you are ready to try and boot the kernel -> your hosed with this problem. This should be a simple fix, but the light bulb upstairs hasn't blinked on. What's the trick and what do I need to do to fix it? I booted the installed OS from the suse install DVD and reinstalled 2.6.25.20-0.7, so I now have all 3 kernels installed. After reinstall, 2.6.25.20-0.7 boot just fine so all the disk/by-id information in grub/device.map and menu.lst and fstab is fine. What say the experts? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. [opensuse] Wine TCP/IP connectivity

Hi, i'm trying to run a legacy windows application with wine. It's supposed to connect to a SQL Server using ADO. For basic testing I setup a DSN with native ODBC, the thing is it can't reach the server.
