[opensuse] 10.3 rpm version problem?

Hello all. Experimenting with a new kernel, trying to see if it solves some strange network problems and lockups. Downloaded kernel-source-2.6.25.4-14.1.x86_64.rpm and ran into sudo rpm -ivh kernel-source-2.6.25.4-14.1.x86_64.rpm warning: kernel-source-2.6.25.4-14.1.x86_64.rpm: Header V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID a29f6635 error: Failed dependencies: rpmlib(PayloadIsLzma) <= 4.4.2-1 is needed by kernel-source-2.6.25.4-14.1.x86_64 On Sat. Note also the '<= 4.4.2-1' part in the error message. I don't see an 'rpmlib' package in the output of 'zypper se', and 'locate rpmlib' only shows me /usr/include/rpm/rpmlib.h. The string 'Lzma' does not appear to be in the rpm manpage. Confused: should I upgrade, downgrade, sideways? Thanks. [opensuse] How To plan migration from v10.3 -> v11 *and* Smart -> Zypper ?

I have an OpenSuse 10.3 box, sync-ing with a bunch of repos using Smart Package Manager. With OpenSuse 11 on the way, I'm trying to figure out the "best" (= safe? = easy?) way to migrate/upgrade my current setup. I'd like to end up using the new Zypper/Yast2 under v11. What are the steps I should take to (1) prepare for the upgrade to "Release 11", and (2) switchover from Smart to Zypper/Yast2? [opensuse] Installing to USB HDD as bootable drive?

I came across this thread at the webforums, http://www.suseforums.net/index.php?showtopic=50595, and it sounds very interesting. Like the OP, I'm not wild about having to physically disconnect my internal HD to set up the USB drive, but it would be nice to have a bootable HDD that I could take with me for use on friends' PCs etc. That's why I thought I would help both myself and the OP by asking their question here, too. I've read the answers to their post, and the pages linked to there, but I'm as new to to this as they are, and just as unclear about whether it will work or not. Hi there, my system got freezed with the errors I report below; this happened two times since the server is running. When this happens, I cannot reboot the system and I have to push the power button. Shall I upgrade the kernel? Any suggestion will be appreciated.... I need some help getting my usb dvd burner burning again. i suspect some update changed something in the system, the "latest" x86-64, using the usual repositories plus oss, non-oss, packman and vlc. the symtoms are as follows: first off, upon bootup the suse install dvd fires up and works perfectly. after startup, turning the drive on and inserting a disk results in the usual popup asking for action to be taken. If I ask for creating a dvd, k3b takes for ever and then posts the message that "no cd/dvd device exists". any subsequent attempt to access the drive fails. turning the device off and on, manually ejecting and reinserting any disk has no effect. no more pop ups prompting for action. The maddening thing is that if i chose to just explore an inserted dvd instead of using k3b at the first popup, i can read the data on a disk, but i can never see anything if i try to access w. k3b. I have used the Suse k3b and a couple of Packman versions, including the latest. Sigh, groan, Well, having persuaded my system to run 32bit flash under the 64bit firefox, I now have another problem, and I think I have to have the 32bit firefox after all. I need to run Java in my browser... I've tried using nspluginwrapper, and it rejects all the plugin .so files that I thought might be contenders (I downloaded a 32bit jre separately from my regular 64bit one) Soooo... two questions: 1) How do folks run Java in firefox on a 64bit linux system? 2) Assuming I have to have a 32bit Firefox, where the heck do I get it, as all my attempts so far have been preempted, and I've always ended up with a 64bit version somehow? [[ and 3) I hardly dare ask for fear of either looking stupid (too late!) or starting a religious war, but how much performance benefit do I really get from running 64bit? Does anyone have any representative metrics? I'm not interested in "well, obviously this, and that" because in my experience "obvious" factors affect performance in very non-obvious ways. I've also tried FS='\\024' FS='\0376\024\0376' FYI: This may be a one time need and it is only about 500 lines, so using vi to manually do it is acceptable, but the text within the quotes can be very long, so it is hard to work on visually. The good news is that cntrl-T (\024) should never appear within any of the actual fields. I'm not exactly sure what you're trying to change so I'll offer several suggestions: start vi with: $ vi myfile.dat then inside vi type :%s/^v^t.*$// (colon, percent, lowercase-ess, forward-slash, control-v, control-t, period, asterisk, dollar, forward-slash, forward-slash) will delete everything from the last control-t to the end of the line, on every line in the file If I didn't quite understand, please feel free to ask again explaining what I misunderstood and I'll see what I can do.
