[opensuse] usb dvd drive
I need some help getting my usb dvd burner burning again. i suspect some update changed something in the system, the "latest" x86-64, using the usual repositories plus oss, non-oss, packman and vlc. the symtoms are as follows: first off, upon bootup the suse install dvd fires up and works perfectly. after startup, turning the drive on and inserting a disk results in the usual popup asking for action to be taken. If I ask for creating a dvd, k3b takes for ever and then posts the message that "no cd/dvd device exists". any subsequent attempt to access the drive fails. turning the device off and on, manually ejecting and reinserting any disk has no effect. no more pop ups prompting for action. The maddening thing is that if i chose to just explore an inserted dvd instead of using k3b at the first popup, i can read the data on a disk, but i can never see anything if i try to access w. k3b. I have used the Suse k3b and a couple of Packman versions, including the latest. I do not think it is k3b, something in the mounting goes funky. rchal restart does not reset the problem. yes, the stoopid thing works in xp... starting k3b from console and checking w. dmesg and hwinfo (only the relevant portions) gives the following errors: -------------------------------------------------- (K3bDevice::HalConnection) initializing HAL >= 0.5 /dev/sr0 resolved to /dev/sr0 (K3bDevice::Device) could not open device /dev/sr0 for reading (No such device or address) could not open device /dev/sr0 (No such device or address) /dev/scd0 resolved to /dev/sr0 (K3bDevice::Device) could not open device /dev/sr0 for reading (No such device or address) could not open device /dev/sr0 (No such device or address) (K3bDevice::DeviceManager) SCANNING FOR GENERIC DEVICES. bus: 0, id: 0, lun: 0 bus: 4, id: 0, lun: 0 bus: 4, id: 1, lun: 0 Need a filename that resolves to a SCSI device Could not resolve /dev/sg4 (K3bDevice::Device) could not open device /dev/sg4 for reading (No such file or directory) Could not resolve /dev/sg5 (K3bDevice::Device) could not open device /dev/sg5 for reading (No such file or directory) Could not resolve /dev/sg6 (K3bDevice::Device) could not open device /dev/sg6 for reading (No such file or directory) Could not resolve /dev/sg7 (K3bDevice::Device) could not open device /dev/sg7 for reading (No such file or directory) Could not resolve /dev/sg8 (K3bDevice::Device) could not open device /dev/sg8 for reading (No such file or directory) Could not resolve /dev/sg9 (K3bDevice::Device) could not open device /dev/sg9 for reading (No such file or directory) Could not resolve /dev/sg10 (K3bDevice::Device) could not open device /dev/sg10 for reading (No such file or directory) Could not resolve /dev/sg11 (K3bDevice::Device) could not open device /dev/sg11 for reading (No such file or directory) Could not resolve /dev/sg12 (K3bDevice::Device) could not open device /dev/sg12 for reading (No such file or directory) Could not resolve /dev/sg13 (K3bDevice::Device) could not open device /dev/sg13 for reading (No such file or directory) Could not resolve /dev/sg14 (K3bDevice::Device) could not open device /dev/sg14 for reading (No such file or directory) Could not resolve /dev/sg15 (K3bDevice::Device) could not open device /dev/sg15 for reading (No such file or directory) Devices: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- dmesg usbcore: registered new interface driver usbhid drivers/hid/usbhid/hid-core.c: v2.6:USB HID core driver usb 3-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 3 usb 3-2: new device found, idVendor=04b4, idProduct=6830 usb 3-2: new device strings: Mfr=0, Product=57, SerialNumber=44 usb 3-2: Product: Cypress AT2LP usb 3-2: SerialNumber: DEF1064A6FC1 usb 3-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice usb-storage: device found at 3 usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning usbcore: registered new interface driver usb-storage usb-storage: device scan complete ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- hwinfo: 50: SCSI 600.0: 10602 CD-ROM (DVD) [Created at block.237] UDI: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_4b4_6830_DEF1064A6FC1_if0_scsi_ho st_scsi_device_lun0_scsi_generic Unique ID: mZxt.GZc3Y91k6v4 Parent ID: sClz.aWxnkWagtQ7 SysFS ID: /block/sr0 SysFS BusID: 6:0:0:0 SysFS Device Link: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.7/usb3/3-2/3-2:1.0/host6/tar get6:0:0/6:0:0:0 Hardware Class: cdrom Model: "ATAPI DVD DD 8X16X8X16" Vendor: usb 0x04b4 "ATAPI" Device: usb 0x6830 "DVD DD 8X16X8X16" Revision: "GSJB" Serial ID: "DEF1064A6FC1" Driver: "usb-storage", "sr" Driver Modules: "usb_storage" Device File: /dev/sr0 (/dev/sg3) Device Files: /dev/sr0, /dev/scd0, /dev/disk/by-id/usb-ATAPI_DVD_DD_8X16X8X16_ DEF1064A6FC1-0:0, /dev/disk/by-path/pci-0000:00:1a.7-usb-0:2:1.0-scsi-0:0:0:0, / dev/cdrom, /dev/cdrw, /dev/dvd, /dev/dvdrw Device Number: block 11:0 (char 21:3) Features: DVD Speed: 480 Mbps Module Alias: "usb:v04B4p6830d0240dc00dsc00dp00ic08isc06ip50" Driver Info #0: Driver Status: usb_storage is active Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe usb_storage" Drive status: no medium Config Status: cfg=new, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown Attached to: #19 (USB Controller) Drive Speed: 48 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ thanks in advance, d. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

same problem here, anf googling said it's a k3b (or growisofs) problem. hope a fix will be found (the patches I have seen don't works for me and I have set the writer inside may desktop) jdd -- Jean-Daniel Dodin Président du CULTe www.culte.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Until you mentioned k3b as the problem i had been looking elsewhere, i never imagined that k3b would make the drive non-existent! busy yes, but not "not found"!! after that it was easy to find a bunch of shtuff on google, none of it good, some quite old!!!! so i am trying a rather ugly workaround: I create the dvd image with k3b, (gosh, it's just one click!!), store it on the hard drive, then I use nerolinux to burn it. Nero does see the drive *and* writes to it just fine, just checked it out. I guess k3b (or wodim / genisoimage or whatever) needs to do something about it; fixing this bug would make a very nice interface usable again for many, spoiled me as well... d. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

What is the output of getfacl /dev/sr0? i.e., mine is joe@jmorris:~> getfacl /dev/sr0 getfacl: Removing leading '/' from absolute path names # file: dev/sr0 # owner: root # group: disk user::rw- user:joe:rw- group::r-- mask::rw- other::--- I am thinking that since k3b needs write privilege, that is normally (in suse at least) provided by resmgr, but not sure how that would happen on a post login installed device like a usb dvd drive. If the permissions are wrong, and since this is a device you would need write privilege, you could try writing a udev rule specifically for that device that gives it proper privileges. To check if permissions are the problem, you could try temporarily changing the permissions (before opening k3b), and making sure k3b (running as your user) has write access, or perhaps try k3b as root via "kdesu k3b" to see if that gives access, since the device above shows me its owner from udev rules would be root rw-. Thanks, but no luck: ------------------------------------------------ getfacl: Removing leading '/' from absolute path names # file: dev/sr0 # owner: root # group: disk user::rw- user:justme:rw- group::r-- mask::rw- other::--- ------------------------------------------------ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
