Where companies like Novell make their money is not by selling Linux, but by selling support and expertise. There is nothing wrong with that. They give Linux away (except for the cost of the media and paper) and earn their money by conducting seminars, sending support engineers out, helping design installations, answering technical questions to those that are willing to pay for that information. They don't have to pay people to verify 60 digit CD codes were legally obtained by you from a particular store for a particular machine with a CPU having certain disk drives in it. What a world Microsoft has created! It makes honest people *think* they are thieves!!!! Lynn, STOP feeling guilty about USING Linux and certainly stop feeling guilty about asking for help, whether or not you eventually make a profit from the information is irrelevant. I found out when I tried to put a Win-XP VM on a 16 GB USB key just how slow those are compared with ordinary disk access. I mean, I already knew that, but it wasn't really obvious just *how* bad it was until I could see controls and buttons on an application getting drawn one at a time. I moved that VM to an ordinary external HD with a USB 2.0 connection, and it was quite usable. Not as convenient to move from one computer to another, granted, but it made the difference between works and doesn't work. [opensuse] cups and Windows

Hi, Okay, after playing around a little bit for a while i still gotta come and ask here. I got my printer setup on my suse 10.1 server system and i can print just fine with my Suse 10.2 client but not with the Windows client(s). In Windows i can browse for the printer and it shows it up nicely. Double click tells me that it'll download the driver to the system but then it still can't find it and i will need to install it manually. Anyways, once done this, i can nicely add it to my windows printer(s) but when i try to print something it tells me "Access denied, unable to connect". I'm not reallly sure what's wrong since i can print from my suse 10.2 client just fine. Can anyone help me? This would be appreciated! hey all, its been awhile since i've had to compile a kernel, but i had to for some things and i've installed it with no real issue, the thing is that I used the old initrd file for my boot loader. Therefore it didn't seem to load the new modules. Makes sense i guess. Anyway, i'm on a ppc and i have not found an easy way to create an initrd image. Hi, I want to mix some music and use therefore the headphone-out and the line-out of my soundcard independently. By now, I can only change the volume for both headphone-out and line-out together using master-volume. The Volume-control for the Headphones in the mixer doesn't have any effect. Does anyone know if that is possible with my soundcard? Intel 82801DB-ICH4 Chipset Analog Devices AD1981B . [opensuse] Weird problem in KDE 3.5.7

I'm using openSUSE 10.2 and KDE 3.5.7, and for some reason when ever I right click on anything in the desktop nothing happens but left clicking works fine. I know its not the mouse, which is a PS/2 two button with scroll bar, because it only does this in KDE and this problem only started happening today. I'm wondering if anyone else had this problem before and if so what they did to fix it. Thanks

[opensuse] Gutenprint - OpenSuSE 10.0 - where are the PPD files?

I've got OpenSuSE 10.0 installed to my desktop. I want to use my Olympus P10 photo printer on the PC. I installed Gutenprint 5.0.1, following the INSTALL & README files. It was written that Gutenprint includes PPD files for the printers it supports, and that they are usually found at /usr/share/cups/model/gutenprint. I cannot find the PPD files anywhere on my system. I have restarted CUPS, and it does not list any Olympus printers when I try to add a printer. I've tried searching the 'net for a PPD file for my printer, and all I found was a handful of sites explaining that the appropriate PPD was included with Gutenprint. (AAGGHHH!!) I must be missing something ridiculously obvious here, but I'm stuck. Help? With such a configuration you cannot expect to have squid proxy and all the other features to deliver performance for hundreds of users, but it worked very well for my home network and it worked and worked and worked and never stopped. [opensuse] Dell Notebook

I have a friend that has a Dell notebook that is a Windows holdout. However, he keeps seeing my setup at home and listening to me tout SuSE and he sent me a question recently that I simply can't answer. Will it work on his machine? This is the information he sent me: The info on this machine is: Dell Inspiron 1521 - AMD Turion X2 1.6 Ghz processor, 2 Gb RAM, 160 Gb HD, Sigma Tel high def audio codec, ATI Radeon X1270 video, Broadcomm wireless 802.11b/g. The SUSE 10.2 Live dvd had everything working except the sound and the wireless. I was wondering if anyone in the SUSE forums had this configuration and had everything working under 10.2? Any information about how well 10.2 in particular performs on the above hardware ESPECIALLY multimedia. He listens to MP3's and watches *.avi and DVDs and even plugs his stereo into the line out jack so he can listen to his CD collections he has captured on disk. He currently uses Windows and if 10.2 works well with his specific hardware, I believe he will now join the ranks of EX Windows. I would also be interested in how 10.3 B3 and later work though from testing on my home machines (not Dell), I am not sure it is quite ready for prime time. It has 'eaten' my drives, hidden my cursor, blanked my sound, and while I'm willing to test and try to debug 10.3, I'm not sure it is quite ready for someone so currently Windows centric but 'looking'. [opensuse] Strange behaviour of KMenu

I updated to KDE 3.5.7-79.2 today (on openSUSE10.2), and I have one small problem.. can't quite figure it out. In KMenu, there is an entry for Smart (under System > Configuration). The Command entry for that menu item is: smart --gui This is what it should be. If I click that menu item, I get the usual popup asking for the root password. Now this is where it goes a bit odd. The Command as shown in the Run as root window is only the --gui part. If I type in my password at attempts to launch and returns an error "Command '--gui' not found. For some reason the KMenu entry is dropping the leading part of the command. If I remove the --gui part, then no command is issued after the root password is entered... and of course this errors out. I created a new menu item for Smart and typed in the various bits. Same results. If I remove the Run as root setting and launch Smart as $USER from the KMenu, it launches normally - although in readonly mode (normal behaviour for Smart running as $USER). Smart can be launched as root from the command line with smart --gui with no problem. Also smart can be launched normally using the context menu item in KSmartTray. So... it's nothing to do with Smart itself. I have also randomly tried other apps in the KMenu, and they all work normally... including onces that run as root (which pop up the root password window). So this is broken, but only for the command smart --gui, or smart (with no options). Has anyone else ran into this yet? Any ideas what or why this is happening for this one menu item? [opensuse] Have to kick start kicker on KDE start - every time? Thoughts?

Listmates, Strange occurrences with kicker lately. Problem - it doesn't start on KDE start anymore. I manually have to start it with alt+f2. Settings->Control Center->KDE Components->The tweaK Applet has panel set to start with KDE but it doesn't?? I have tried setting it/apply, unsetting/apply and resetting/apply still no luck. Anybody know where the magic config file is, or where to check for it under? [opensuse] wlan0 has "no wireless extensions"

Hello all, I have a Prism2-based USB card (the Netgear MA111 v1) and I am trying it out under 10.3. The card is recognized by lsusb and the modules prism2_usb and p80211 are loaded. It appears under YaST where I can enter it's configuration. Only iwconfig reports "wlan0 no wireless extensions.". Now, I know that the card is working (I use it on a daily basis on a 10.1 system). And before anyone tells me to just use ndiswrapper or buy a newer, better supported card, I also am having the exact same trouble with a Broadcom based card (ndiswrapper) on my 10.2 laptop. The laptop is somewhat troubling - I was using it without issue until last week when after a reboot iwconfig started reporting "no wireless extensions". The card is working under Windows. Ideally, if someone could tell me which configuration files control the wireless, that would be great. Network setup under Linux has always been sort of a black box for me and I would like to get my hands a little dirty and see how the configuration is done. I have discovered that new OpenSuse 10.3 non OSS version will have Mp3 support using Fluendo GStreamer plugin, but, knowing about some Novell and Microsoft collaborative work, there will be no wmv and wma support yet. And my question is: will it be added in the near future as Mp3 support was? Kirill Kirillov. P.S. Hi I have setup a vsftpd server and it works fine. Users can login and are chroote'd to their home folders. I have allowed myself to break out of the chroot because I want to manage files under /srv/www/htdocs remotely. But I do not have permissions to do anything there. Stuff under htdocs is owned by root:root on the server but ftp'ing in here it's owned by 0:0. How can I give myself permission to the htdocs folder? Thanks. [opensuse] MythTV - hiding files?

I am using MythTV to manage my video collection. I have one video that has subtitles in srt format. To get MPlayer to pickup on the srt file I have to use the "Unique Player Command line and enter the line: mplayer -fs -zoom -quiet -vo xv %s -sub <path>/subtitlefile.srt This works, but only if the subtitle file is in the same directory as the video file. If the subtitle file is located anywhere else on the filesystem, then MPlayer cannot pick up on it... even if the path is explicitly stated in the -sub option. I can live with this... but since the subtitle file is located in the same directory as the video file, then it lands in the database, and shows up when you browse the videos. This I don't want. I have tried the toggle browseable option but this has no effect on removing the srt file from the video gallery. Does anyone know how to either convince MPlayer (in MythTV) to pick up on the srt from another directory? or how to flag a specific file in the movie directory as not visible when browsing the videos? [opensuse] Mouse Problems

I have a Suse 10.2 system. When I shut it down a couple of days ago and brought it back up the mouse acts like it has a second delay in everything it does. Moving and even clicking. It is very hard to use this way. This happened before when the power went down. That time I finally had to reinstall to get it working. This time that did not work. Has anyone else had this problem? Hi, I am running SuSE 10.2 under VMWare. The processor load when ideling is very high (20-30%). VMWare support said that I would need a VMI enabled kernel. Is there a rpm that can be downloaded somewhere that contains such a kernel? All kind of other performance tips related to SuSE under VMWare (Fusion) would be great as well.
