Changing the attributes of files is not supported with protocol drives Using the Mycomputer icon I tried to fix the permissions on floppy and the USB flash. What does this mean? Do I hack fstab or fix permissions as root? CWSIV

parted on boot CDs?

Do the boot disks in SuSE 9.1 have parted on them? I remember with RHL we could boot the install disk, get to a shell prompt on a VC, and run various tools. I don't know if parted was mature when I last used RHL, but I have a need for parted on a system we want to install and I'm wondering if it will be available at boot time if we get the 9.1 Pro set. Linux mail client on Win/Exchange network

I am going to test Linux as a desktop OS at work. Here our mail server is an MS-Exchange 5.5. on Windows NT4. But which mail client to choose - Kmail (Kontact) or Evolution? Have anyone here ran a similar setup with Exchange? Does anyone know which of the two clients is the best for IMAP? Background: I am installing SuSE 9.1. As far as I understand Ximian Connector only works with Exchange 2000/2003 and KDE (Kontact) doesn't talk Exchange´isk. I therefore expect us to be forced to access my mail via IMAP. I once read an articles telling that Kmail dosen´t support IMAP as well as Exchange (some problems with searching folder on the IMAP-server?). But is it true and what about Evolution? I is important that the mail remains on the Exchange server First of all I just need mail to work 100%. Calendar and other features can wait. I am considering Evolution because it very much looks like Outlook (which everybody here uses) and because it provides calendar etc which we might need in the long run (and maybe one day change the Exchange server to something different). But on the other hand I am a KDE user and find the Kontact project to be interesting. Also I am wondering if the combination of Evolution and KDE will cause problems (usability, technical copy/paste etc)? I'd appreciate comments and experiences. CUPS weird behavior

Hello list, I have a question for the CUPS gurus on the list. I and my wife both have noticed that CUPS that comes with SuSE 9.1 will not accept jobs while it is spooling/printing a job. We both thought that this didn't do this in previous versions of SuSE. Is their a way to get CUPS to take on more jobs while it is trying to print one? I looked and we have plenty of disk space so that should not be an issue. I do not know if this will help but the printer that we are printing to is on the network on a small print server. We do the spooling on the local machines. Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks. Marshall

Apache2/PHP4, is there an issue?

Hi all, I just upgraded to SuSE 9.1 Personal and found that an apache1 package didn't exist so I installed apache2. I have a program that worked before, under SuSE 9.0 and apache1/php4, but it doesn't work now. The error message is: Fatal error: Call to undefined function: session_start() I've heard bad things about PHP4/Apache2. Is this error because of an incompatibility between PHP4 and Apache2 or is it the program? If it is because of Apache2, what can I do? Do I need to install PHP4/Apache1? 9.1 Pro install problem

I attempted fresh installs (twice) of 9.1 Pro on my system with a new harddrive. Each time it starts loading packages from DVD it takes forever. Several minutes for packages less than 1MB in size. After 2.5 hours only 8% was loaded. I aborted the install and then attempted an 8.2 Pro install on the same hardware thinking maybe the HD was giving me problems and it just completed loading all the packages from DVD in less than 1 hour. Anybody know what might be happening here? Any thing in the 2.6 kernel that might bog down with my hardware? Hardware info: Asus Mobo with Athlon XP 2200+ 512MB Ram ATI Radeon 7500 Maxtor 40GB (M$ XP)=hda Sony DVD player = hdb Maxtor 120GB, 8MB cache (new drive) = hdc Plextor CDRW = hdd Any help is appreciated, Darrell

Mozilla/firefox - printing using strange fonts

I have recently moved from SuSE 9.0 to 9.0 (Fresh install not an upgrade), when printing from any Mozilla component (inc. firefox, thunderbird, mozilla itself) it prints using odd truetype fonts, initially burnstowndam and another a bit like comic sans, disabling those fonts just made the applications print using another (seemingly random) truetype font. Can't find any reference to these font anywhere in mozilla settings, any pointers thanks Dave

9.1:Quickcam Pro 4000

Does anyone have this webcam (or any of the other Philips driver webcams) working under 9.1? Without further assistance, I am not finding the traditional Philips webcm web site (http://www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/) very helpful. Thanks in advance for any assistance. geno

Linksys WPC54G

I've just acquired a wireless network card, Linksys WPC54G. When I insert it in my laptop, it is detected and the popup window appears asking me if I wish to configure it. After clicking yes and entering the root password, the network configuration starts but does not detect any device. Has anyone had any luck setting up this card, or know how I can go about doing so (documentation etc.)? I am using SuSE 9.1, kernel 2.6.5-7.75-default, KDE 3.2.3. TIA Eddie

keyboard layout problem

Hi ! My system is a SuSE 9.1, and my keyboard is a international keyboard from Logitech. My system is configured to use US accents: YaST/System/Select Keyboard Layout/Portuguese (Brazil -- US accents). The problem is the key sequence ' + c is not generating a c-cedilla. Instead, I got a c with a acute accent (a c-acute). Is supposed to this key sequence generate a c-cedilla. All other accent+vowel works as expected (áéíóú, etc) How can I fix this ? The c-cedilla is a important character in my language. any ideas will be welcome !
