Hi, What is the procedure for making a series of patch CD's (ie more than one). Is it just, splitting the files of patches directory and making the patch CD's accordingly making sure dependencies are taken into consideration or is there a defined method. -- Togan Muftuoglu

Chroot of Bind 9

I have Bind 9 running, but it does not start on boot-up. SuSE 7.2 Pro is the OS. Is there a similar chkconfig on Redhat. Any suggestions. I have to start it manually with rcnamed start. I can post the rcnamed string if need be.

KDE desktop icons won't stay put

I'm posting here because I haven't had an answer on kde-linux or suse-kde. When I log in as a normal user, the desktop icons are always moved around. I put them back, but when I log out and back in, they always return to the same places, sort of scattered about the desktop. How can I fix this? portmap used by inetd?

Hi all! I am using the runlevel editor in Suse 8.0. I was disabling unneeded services so I tried to disable portmap as I always did before. THis time yast2 comes up and shouts that portmap is necessary to inetd? Is it true? Why now it is needed and before it was not? Is it a bug? TIA, Praise

big hard drive, drive overlays and Linux

OK, I have been poking about on the web for some guidance on this. This is the scenario: I have a 386sx25 with 16MB RAM that I am installing Slackware on (I know, not SuSE, but I have tried without success all versions from 6.4 through 8.0. Slackware 8.0 includes option to install on 386 systems, and worked first try.) Anyway, the 500MB HD I currently have in the system is the limit of the BIOS. I have a 1.2Gig Quantum I want to install to give me a larger sandbox to play in. The problem is... how do I get around the BIOS issues? Do I need to? Back in the DOS days I would download OnTrack and use that to do the BIOS redirects to give me access to a drive larger than what the BIOS understands. In my research on this, so far, I have only turned up a lot of nothing. RedHat has some info on this in their FAQ that basically says don't ask them for help, install on a different drive. http://www.redhat.com/support/sla/SLAdescriptions.html#nooverlay I found this reference http://www.linuxhq.com/kernel/v2.0/doc/ide.txt.html and in the new features is mentions Dynamic Disk Overlays... not much info about the how, what, where though. Is it possible that since (as I understand it) Linux directly access the HD, the drive overlay thing is not an issue? (vs. the Windows -> BIOS -> HD way)??? C.

Why not beta test with mailing list people before release?

After seeing how many patches, updates and bug fixes have already appeared for 8.0 and also how slow the updates download on the update server that it would be appropriate to give predistribution copies to some hard core users from the mailing lists to beta test each distribution before release to the general public.. This would significantly speed up the update servers due to less files downloaded and MORE IMPORTANTLY less bugs in releases would scare off less users that are new to linux.

7.2 -> 8 update problem

Hi, Trying to update a 7.2 box to 8, and I am failing at first base. If I select system update in Yast2, although it identifies that the souce medium is SuSE8, it finds no packages to update aftering doing the package 'search'. It does not seam to be reading from the CD during this time. If I reboot the machine with the 7.2 boot disks (did not get any in the 8 box), and select system update, it loads something into RAMDISK and then takes me back to the 'select system update' menu. ???? The large number of complaints about particular problems in 8.0 on listserv make me wonder whether there is doubt about the reliability of technical support at S.u.S.E. Is there such doubt? dj tuchler

Konq & Launching Progs as Root

It has always been my practice to run as a user, and to invoke Konq & Konsole in superuser mode when I need them thus. But with Suse8 I can no longer (as a user) launch X-based programs from these windows. Logged in as root I can, but not when as a user and launching from these programs. For instance in Konq I cannot right-click|OpenWith|Advanced Editor a file: "KDEInit could not launch 'kwrite'". And from the su konsole # konqueror and I get: Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: No protocol specified konqueror: cannot connect to X server :0 In user konsole $ kdesu konqueror yields nothing. This looks alot like a security issue. Maybe the X server is intentionally disabled from accepting root commands from a user. Or maybe it's one missing setup step.
