[SLE] Kppp,WvDial and the kernel

Hello everyone, I have a couple of questions that you may be able to help me with: 1) When I try to get online with Kppp as a non-root user I get the much dreaded 'pppd deamon died unexpectedly' message. Why is that? There are no problems with Kppp at all when I go online as root. 2a) After configuring WvDial the following line appears repeatedly when I boot my system; modprobe: Note: /etc/conf.modules is more recent than /lib/modules/2.2.10/modules.dep Does that mean I need to recompile the kernel? b) When using WvDial as a non-root user I get these extra lines during the dialup; -->Warning: Could not modify /etc/ppp/pap-secrets: Permission denied --> --> PAP may be flaky --> --> CHAP may be flaky There are no problems with establishing a connection at all, however. 3) The directory /usr/src contains the following files; linux linux-2.2.10 linux-2.2.10.SuSE packages What can I get rid of when I install a new kernel? I'd really appreciate any kind of help with these issues. [SLE] App on startup run as specific user?

Hi, I am setting up my Linux pc at home with vmc to allow the windows machines to access my linux box. It is all working great and I'm very happy with it, a tad slower than I would have liked but not bad all the same. I wish it would be as fast as physically sitting in front of the computer, but then that would be asking too much? Anyway, I want to avoid the need to telnet into the box to start the vncserver. I want to be able to start up 2 servers one for each user during startup. I set up a script executable by the user which has only 1 line: vncserver 192.168.0.1:2 to start the server. I can put the path for this script in the boot.local file, but how do I make it run as the user I want? It needs to be run as the correct user to set the password properly for vnc. Another alternative would be to have vnc start not straight into the window manager, but to simply have a kdm login prompt for the user to be able to log into. Does anyone know how to do this? [SLE] Clock Wanders

Hello After throwing away a new motherboard and replacing it with one that is Y2000 compliant I have found that the system clock still wanders around between days and hours. SuSE 5.2 had a program to correct this problem. Can anyone remember the name of the file or program ? I have several 5.2 CDs but can't think which file I should use. Surprising. RedHat has a sound config utility with the os. It is as easy as 1 2 3 Seems strange to me that with 4.2 gigs of software in the SuSE distribution, you have to buy a separate piece to make your industry standard sound card work. Hi people Does anyone know _surely_ if HP Colorado 5GB (compressed)/2.5GB (normal) tape device with IDE i/f is penguin-compatible?? The hardware comp list @Suse is too vague I need an answer in hours, because my corporation is about to buy 40-50 tape backup for linux boxes.
