Run at Boot

Ok, I tried to run something at boot (boot.local), with one problem. It seems that it was running before the network drivers were loaded. I need this daemon to run at runlevel 2(?), whichever is the last one it reaches before it drops you to the login prompt. Hello, emails are appearing in my SuSE folder, which have my Subject lines, sent from postmaster(a)huzd002a.te6.siemens.be Everytime I post, I receive my post via the thread as well as this thing with the same exact Subject line. What is it? The contents are always the same. 1. In the beginning GOD created the Bit and the Byte. And from those he created the Word. 2. And there were two Bytes in the Word; and nothing else existed. And God separated the One from the Zero; and he saw it was good. 3. And God said - Let the Data be; And so it happened. And God said Let the Data go to their proper places. And he created floppy disks and hard disks and compact disks. 4. And God said - Let the computers be, so there would be a place to put floppy disks and hard disks and compact disks. Thus God created computers and called them hardware. 5. And there was no Software yet. But God created programs; small and big... And told them - Go and multiply yourselves and fill all the Memory. 6. And God said -I will create the Programmer; And the Programmer will make new programs and govern over the computers and programs and Data. 7. And God created the Programmer; and put him at Data Center; And God showed the Programmer the Catalog Tree and said You can use all the volumes and subvolumes but DO NOT USE Windows. 8. And God said - It is not Good for the programmer to be alone. And the Programmer answered - I am looking for new drivers because I can not find them in the DOS. And God said - Who told you need drivers? Did you run Windows? And the Programmer said - It was Bill who told us to! 16. And God said to Bill - Because of what you did you will be hated by all the creatures. And the User will always be unhappy with you. [SuSE Linux] ADSL

Did anyone already try ADSL with SuSE Linux? Or know what is required? According to what I've heard, the Danish telecom will install an ADSL box that talks ATM, so there has to be an ATM card in the Linux box. [SLE] how to build your own NIC driver module?

I need a bit help here.... It's nothing SuSE specific but it might also be helpful for others? I try to learn more about the driver structure under Linux. I am using an Accton Cheetah PC 10/100 network card in a SuSE 6.1 box, Kernel 2.2.5 (one of the servers), here with a Realtek RTL8129/8139 driver at the moment. This was working fine for weeks now but 2 days ago the PC lost his network connection while I copied a 12MB file from the server to another PC (via Samba). I have never had a problem before, even when I did my own performance testing by uploading a 50MB file from a workstation to that server various times and also uploading the same file to the Win NT server for comparisons. The change which I made in between was the replacement of the 10Mb hub by a 10/100MB hub (which btw. makes the expected, significant difference when I upload the 50MB file to the SuSE box now). Ok, to cut the story: I downloaded a Linux driver from Accton's site for that card which was written for RH, kernel 2.0.36 as they state. The zipped file contains a module 'en1207d.o' and the source (?) 'en1207d.c' (I am unsure whether that's all for a driver's source needed? Do other drivers also have an additional .h source file?). I wanted to load the module with insmod but it told me that it was written for 2.0.36! Now I would like to try to build a module for the existing 2.2.5 kernel. The questions: Where do I have to put the .c file? I hope when it sits in the proper directory, I can create the module with a kernel compile + make modules + make modules_install? If it works that way, what will I have to do, to list that driver also in the selection list with the other available drivers under Yast? Am I on the right track here or will that never work? [SLE] Masquerading Causing Hair Loss

Thanks to all those that helped. I'm up and running now. My problem was the IP being specified in the MSQ setup. I was using 192.168.0.0/24 and changing to 192.168.1.0/24 did the trick. Changing the MSQ_DEV from eth0 to ppp0 didn't seem to make any difference. I also had to put the following in my boot.local ipchains -P forward DENY ipchains -A forward -j MASQ -s 192.168.1.0/24 -d 0.0.0.0/0 It was a little frustrating that it took so long to get this working when the steps were so simple. A little 5 Minute Masquerding HowTo on the SuSE site would be useful since I think this is something the majority of people who use Linux want to do. I'm glad that SuSE put the MSQ symbols in the configuration file, it does make it easier once you understand what needs to be done. Again thanks to the great mailing list. Now on to try my Windows98 and Win2K clients, then firewalling! [SLE] GATEWAY ADDRESS

I've looked at /etc/route.conf and it has default set to 192.168.1.1 so I assume this is pointing to my IP MASQ machine to resolve a network address. If I try and ftp or ping from this machine to the outside world through my gateway I get "network unreachable". I can get to the network from my gateway without a problem (eg this email). I'm using the 2.0.36 kernel and the following commands to setup the IP MASQ. I've set IP_FORWARDING to yes in rc.config. Anything else I'm obviously missing? I used ipfwadm -F -p deny ipfwadm -F -a m -S 192.168.1.0/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0 Should I forget working with 2.0.36 and upgrade to SuSE 6.2? [SLE] GATEWAY Address

Where does this actually get set? In yast for eth0 I put in my gateway address of 192.168.1.1 (which is my IPMASQ server) but when I look in rc.config at the IFCONFIG_0 parameter it points to 192.168.1.255.
