I'm trying to get the projector Panasonic PT-AX200E to work on my Asus M2A-VM-HDMI board using a HDMI connection. I setup up a dual monitor configuration according to the example given in the wiki. The other monitor is connected to the board via DVI. So I want to use to digital outputs simultaneously. In theory this should work using this hardware.
Unfortunately, it will only work in clone mode, always:
DVI-D_1 disconnected (normal) RANDR_OUTPUT_NUMBER: 2 (0x00000002)
DVI-D_2 connected 1280x1024+0+0 (0x47) normal (normal) 376mm x 301mm RANDR_OUTPUT_NUMBER: 2 (0x00000002)
Connectors with the same output number can only display cloned images. This is due to hardware(!) wiring on the boards, the board maker used the same output for different connectors. Bad, ugly. These connectors cannot even be switched on and off independently, and this can result in *very* obscure behavior. The RandR model isn't flexible enough to reflect this.
Although we may not interpret the SupportedDevice table correctly with respect to DFP2 (as this is the first device I've come accross which supports DFP2 and we have not received any information regarding this until yesterday). Still what I'm seeing here after some more thorough investigation is that indeed both outputs are driven by the LVTMA. They listen on different DDC lines, the HDMI port currently only lights up when HDMI is connected at boot time. I'll dive into some more investigation using information I've just received from ATI. I hope that this information will soon be made public as the information on RS690 that has been published does not cover the outputs.
I'm still thinking about misusing the possible_clones field for that, but that would restrict us to having only one cloned-only pair (two in some circumstances), and wouldn't allow us to use cloning in all situations where it actually would make sense.
(WW) RADEONHD(0): RandR: While switching off DVI-D_1: output TMDS B is also used by DVI-D_2 - ignoring
This line in the log indicates this (hardware) configuration.
Which isn't that far off from what I'm seeing on my RS690 board. Cheers, Egbert. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: radeonhd+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: radeonhd+help@opensuse.org
I just found this in the FAQ section of the Asus website. http://support.asus.com/faq/faq.aspx?SLanguage=en-us Select the correct motherboard and press the Search button. Then go the page 4 where you find this: Question: "M2A-VM HDMI claimed to support dual display via its available onboard VGA ports. Does that mean I can use "any two" ports to form dual display platform? Also, what types of dual display modes are supported by this motherboard via its onboard VGA?" Answer: "Yes, M2A-VM HDMI can support dual display via the combination of "_*any two digital output ports, or one digital and one analog port*_". You can enable dual display for _*Clone (Both monitors show the same screen),*_ *_Span (expend your desktop among the two monitors)_*, or *_DualView (Two independent display)_*, depending on your need. The analogue ports are: D-Sub S-Video AV YPbPr Digital ports are: DVI HDMI" I think I need to try that under Windows just to make sure it is correct. Unfortunately I have to install it before I can try... :( Another interesting link is here: http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/mainboard/roundup-690g-sep2k7-page2.html It says that the Asus M2A-VM HDMI is different compared to other RS690 boards by allowing simultaneous digital output. Hm. Interesting. This is not what we see from the Bios tables here, but again, there could be an additional crossbar after the output that connects one of the TMDS-like connectors to different encoders. Nothing we know of yet, though.

Yep, that is bad luck :^]

Ok - maybe the BIOS on this board just doesn't reflect this fact
correctly. If you could check both outputs independently whether they
work, we could verify this thesis.

Does this work with fglrx?
If fglrx work it maybe logs some useful information with --verbose=7

Bingo! I just installed the latest version of fglrx and it is able to drive both DVI and HDMI simultaneously! The Catalyst control center application offers to use different modes besides clone, but the app crashes when choosing something else. I didn't dive into it, I just gave it a try. So at least I prevented installing Windows :) just to find out if the mainbord is capable of what it is promising. I'll do the conntest tests later. Greetings, Patrick Mark Struberg wrote:

OK, I tested both independendly. My monitor alone connected DVI works perfectly. By the way, also using VGA and DVI simultaneously works without a problem (clone mode, I didn't try anything else yet). Now comes the interesting point: When I only use the projector connected via HDMI the X server crashes somewhere in the radeonhd driver. I created a full debug log . See attachment. I didn't use a xorg.conf file. Hope this helps. Greetings, Patrick Matthias Hopf wrote:

Now comes the interesting point: When I only use the projector connected via HDMI the X server crashes somewhere in the radeonhd driver. I created a full debug log . See attachment. I didn't use a xorg.conf file.
Ok, the crash shouldn't happen, but we won't be able to pin down the reason for the crash without a full backtrace. Nevertheless, the server is crashing because it doesn't find any modes for something connected to DVI_D-1 (this is the HDMI connector?). So either the BIOS information is wrong, or we still parse something incorrectly.

I just found this in the FAQ section of the Asus website. http://support.asus.com/faq/faq.aspx?SLanguage=en-us Select the correct motherboard and press the Search button. Then go the page 4 where you find this:
Question: "M2A-VM HDMI claimed to support dual display via its available onboard VGA ports. Does that mean I can use "any two" ports to form dual display platform? Also, what types of dual display modes are supported by this motherboard via its onboard VGA?"
Answer: "Yes, M2A-VM HDMI can support dual display via the combination of "_*any two digital output ports, or one digital and one analog port*_". You can enable dual display for _*Clone (Both monitors show the same screen),*_ *_Span (expend your desktop among the two monitors)_*, or *_DualView (Two independent display)_*, depending on your need.
The analogue ports are: D-Sub S-Video AV YPbPr
Digital ports are: DVI HDMI"
I think I need to try that under Windows just to make sure it is correct. Unfortunately I have to install it before I can try... :(
Another interesting link is here: http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/mainboard/roundup-690g-sep2k7-page2.html
It says that the Asus M2A-VM HDMI is different compared to other RS690 boards by allowing simultaneous digital output.
Just to clarify, the ports are independent. I have the same board. I've used them independently with the radeon driver, however you have to boot up with the HMDI port connected as I still haven't sorted out all of the atom calls needed yet. We are sorting out the necessary information now. Alex
