If I don't set HPD off, I don't get randr to work properly. The highest resolution is then 1024x768. Setting this option allows me to change the mode up to 1920x1440, as xrandr shows me.
Can you also create a log with -logverbose 7 when you don't use 'HPD off'?
I said intentionally "allows me to CHANGE", because if I set the resolution using Option "PreferredMode" "1600x1200" the Xorg-server crashes and I don't get my text terminal back until I reboot. So I change the resolution using Gnome system settings or xrandr.
You're using a 1.4.0 Xserver, AFAIR this has been notoriously broken WRT
PreferredMode. If you can try a 1.4.99 (say: current git) this might(!)
help.
