0x9588:0x174B:0xE420: Saphire HD 2600 XT Ultimate
I got this message in my Xorg.0.log, so I write to you ;) (**) RADEONHD(0): Option "HPD" "off" (WW) RADEONHD(0): !!! Option HPD is set !!! This shall only be used to work around broken connector tables. Please report your findings to radeonhd@opensuse.org (II) RADEONHD(0): Unknown card detected: 0x9588:0x174B:0xE420. If - and only if - your card does not work or does not work optimally please contact radeonhd@opensuse.org to help rectify this. Use the subject: 0x9588:0x174B:0xE420: <name of board>. (--) RADEONHD(0): Detected an RV630 on an unidentified card If I don't set HPD off, I don't get randr to work properly. The highest resolution is then 1024x768. Setting this option allows me to change the mode up to 1920x1440, as xrandr shows me. I said intentionally "allows me to CHANGE", because if I set the resolution using Option "PreferredMode" "1600x1200" the Xorg-server crashes and I don't get my text terminal back until I reboot. So I change the resolution using Gnome system settings or xrandr. My system is: FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE I attached xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log for you. I hope it helps. Keep the good work, please! -- Martin

Can you also create a log with -logverbose 7 when you don't use 'HPD off'?

You're using a 1.4.0 Xserver, AFAIR this has been notoriously broken WRT
PreferredMode. If you can try a 1.4.99 (say: current git) this might(!)
help.

Attached. I also attached my xorg.conf. This is the "best" setup I could configure manually. I produced the log above after commenting out the "Option HPD off" setting and starting with "X -logverbose 7". Btw, the behavior changed. Now xrandr shows correct refresh rates when I just comment out Option "HPD" "off". And I can change resolutions. I don't know what was wrong. Maybe I specified some incorrect settings in my xorg.conf before or some of them were missing (e.g. Virtual and/or refresh rates). There is one remaining problem though without Option "HPD" "off". The VT switch is broken. The screen enters power-save mode, when trying to switch to text terminal. And it wakes up again when I switch to X. That's why I still want to keep this option set. -- Martin

It it just works without Option HPD? Ok, then connector table parsing is correct.

Completely different issue, not related to HPD. Only use Option HPD if
you monitor isn't detected otherwise.

Yes. I think so, too.

I have to use it, or else I cannot switch to text terminal. With Option "HPD" "off" it works again. It may be a different issue, but it fixes a (temporary?) bug for me. -- Martin -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: radeonhd+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: radeonhd+help@opensuse.org

Another thought, looking at the log:
Hm, actually looks like the DDC function isn't working properly for you.
This is something in Egbert's code. Can you create a bug report? Attach
the logfile there, please. Or even better, create it with -logverbose 9,
and attach that one.
Option HPD is certainly not needed for you.
