I'm asking because if we want to plan something for 2012 we need to have a guarantee that the change of openSUSE Board in December won't make us to lose this support as it may interfere with the commitments that we will take with events organizers. I would like to say... the community is made up of volunteers and someway seasonal dedication (except SUSE/Attachmate employees and supposed to be the Board) so I'm totally opposite to have people as reference for a long term. I'm here less than a year and I saw many of "references" leaving-away (including here in Brazil) and even in light of this we're tending to repeat! Also... always have lot of good intention when has money involved or a "free trip". Please everybody don't get this agreesive just a sad ponderation! Here... Dear awesome Ambassadors and Marketeers, We are very excited to announce a new program for our Ambassadors to be able to travel to important events in their regions and promote openSUSE. Over the past few months, Jos and I lobbied and recently received approval from Attachmate to create this program. Each quarter, the Ambassador Team will be allowed to reimburse up to $5,000 (USD) for transportation/hotel expenses. How it works: * At least one month prior to the start of each quarter, ambassadors discuss and make a proposal for expenses to events and other promotion opportunities globally. * The Ambassadors will determine the long term event strategy; deciding which events should be supported with these funds. Jos and I will provide any advice or encouragement needed throughout the process. * Jos has final approval of any expenses. Ambassadors will be reimbursed up to 80% of their personal expenses. * Each quarter is as follows: August 1 - October 31 (Proposal Deadline - July 1) November 1 - Jan 31 (Proposal Deadline - October 1) February 1 - April 30 (Proposal Deadline - Jan 1) May 1 - July 31 (Proposal Deadline - April 1) Why we are doing this? We have two purposes here: A) Tto empower the Ambassador Team to strategically develop a plan of action and determine for itself where it can make the most successes. B) To develop a long-term strategy and schedule. This will improve the flow of funding in a quick manner and also help us to determine what materials and other preparations are needed for the entire year. While this is a quarterly program, we encourage the Ambassadors to think long term (up to 1 year) and identify as many potential events globally. This will help us to better allocate our limited resources. (For example, we are already out of Promo DVDs currently. Long-term planning would help us better anticipate our printing needs.) It will be up to you to determine how best to discuss/document/propose actions. Thanks and feel free to ask any questions you may have! Hi everyone!!! As you might know, SUSE will sponsor the Desktop Summit Berlin, see: https://desktopsummit.org/press/sponsors-announced openSUSE will be there too, and visibly of course! We have people giving talks, bof's and all that, promoting a variety of technology and in general of course just participating in making the Desktop Summit great. As sponsor, SUSE not only is paying money for the DS but also provides some cool stuff: we have openSUSE beer and t-shirts for the Soccer Match on Sunday and we bring the SUSE Studio Kiosk with a number of USB sticks there so people can create their own OS-on-a-stick! Now the DS team is busy enough so we need to help out a bit. A few people need to help handling the beer - I'm sure we can get volunteers for that (yes, drinking allowed as long as you can still carry beer). Hi folks, I'd like to find out how many active openSUSE based desktops are in active use. Here's a proposal that evolved from a discussion during lunch break today: The default home page of all browsers on opensuse points to a very simple url, like opensuse.org/home That page is so usefull that almost all users will appreciate it. For example, it just consists of a very plain and simple search bar (like this well-known one: http://www.google.de/firefox/). Or, maybe even better, it simply offers a number of search engines, and it will, based on a cookie, from here on replace itself with that search engine --- or even a blank page (about:blank). The trick obviously is the durable cookie. The day the cookie is set is the first log in of this desktop user. Every time the user comes back, the cookie helps to bean count the life span of this desktop. If the cookie is rejected, I suggest to give an explanatory page, trying to convince that this is a good cookie, respecting privacy and all. In that vein I also suggest to *not* store the preferred search engine on the server, but to put that into the cookie, alongside the first access time, plus a random hash. Rationale behind this: There is tons of guesswork how many desktops we have conquered. This proposal replaces that by facts. The next two days (for me, 4 days for the RMLL) where the real "RMLL" (Libre software Meeting) This part was organised in the Strasbourg university, on a large hall, many conferences taking place in the university rooms. Jimmy could not stay, oeilvert could not have free time but some hours from his employer, so I had to keep the boot with only my wife. She is not a computer addict at all and could make usefull work in the translation room, with the net result that I was often alone on the boot. I could however visit when my wife or oeilvert could make me free, and like this I could get a free internet certificate and meet many other opensource actors. Some I already know (at least from the net), and other I didn't yet. Very interesting I could also make many demos. I had some free copies of a french computer news paper with an article about Susestudio, and this is really a winner on the OEM market (I could build an appliance right on the way). I could also show that I run on my netbook the Factory release and this is pretty impressive. As soon as I get back my dsl line, I will be able to post photos and videos of the meeting. Beleive it or not I could meet on my on table a Kde french translator that is from my own town :-). Of course I could also meet Vincent (Untz), that provided me with Gnome DVD. I could spread 50-80 dvd a day and when I was obliged to leave, I let the table full of openSUSE and Gnome DVD's We should try to be at least two on the next time, to ba able to have a boot *and* go round speak with people. I had some openSUSE T-Shirts to give as a gift and did this on what I hope to be a wise way: I gave them to people that appears to be openSUSE fans on other boots (that is not only visitors, but groups members), including a Debian member that asked for one saying he will wear it :-) I noticed two things that many people asked for: caps and summary poster. The summary poster (back of the 11.4 poster) was very appreciated (but may be a bit large), like was the Fedora cheat cube. I had two caps for me and my wife, thanks to Jimmy Pierre, but only two and didn't want to give them away :-). They are from the Novell beginning, pretty difficult to find. May be it could be cheaper to spread caps than T-shirts (and they are visible from a more remote position :-). As part of the CFP Committee, I have reviewed proposed sessions and saw some missing stuff so far, which I think we should consider. I have created four proposals tonight though I have not attached any moderators to them yet. (I wanted to get them in before we miss the deadline.) BoF Proposals: "openSUSE Ambassadors Discussion": A BoF to bring together our openSUSE Ambassadors and discuss strategies for the coming year. (Manu and Kostas, do you wish to lead this session?) "Organizing our Artwork Repositories": A look at the current state of our openSUSE Artwork GIT repository and discussing ideas about ways to improve availability and access of artwork for everyone. (I propose one person from Marketing and one from Artwork to co-moderate this BoF. Any volunteers?) Hacksession Proposals: "Marketing Team - Multimedia Planning" Let's storyboard some ideas for cool openSUSE videos that we can use at events and online. In this hacksession, we will organize our thoughts and create basic storyboards for videos and podcasts (Several of us have had some excellent ideas over the years but we never moved forward on it. Its time we came together and put those ideas to good use. JDD, would you like to co-moderate this with me?) " openSUSE 12.1 Artwork" Review of artwork for 12.1 promotion and 12.1 Desktops (I'm not exactly sure what is needed here, but I put it in anyway. Does anyone from Artwork Team wish to moderate this hacksession?) If any of you have ideas for other topics, *please* submit them soon. The RMLL JGP success for us is really a Jimmy Pierre success. Jimmy is with us from a great number of years, beginning to work with Novell before Novell buy SuSE :-) He is comming in most important french Linux event with lot of laptops, network switch (including GSM router!), openSUSE T-Shits and caps... and he is a true animator. His membership application was rejected because he do not write much and often advertise for his group (NUI - Novell Users International) but we should really reconsidere this as he is very well known as openSUSE fan and his group existed prior openSUSE :-) in France. If he was not there my work would have been much harder! So Jimmy provided the computer background. However, the weather was half rainy (and then computer protected under covers) or sunny (and latop computers unreadables). We had large posters (good), but it's far from being attractive enough. *we have to find some way to attract people* We have to come on boots with some kind of gadgets, moving, flashing, a "wow" effect *off screen*. Happily, I was hosted in Strasbourg by "oeilvert" an openSUSE forum moderator, and his main revenue is from embedded Linux hardware. On the RMLL ground was a small modell car, running round, with a small poster (RMLL) handed by a Tux. This was attractive and oeilvert took contact with the builder of this car. I expect from them some result in the near future. But is some people here have ideas... The RMLL are one of the main french meeting around free software. I attended it from Jully 9 to Jully 12 and will report here on the purpose nof keeping experience from it. Just now I have no Internet connection, DSL being closed since last thunderstorm, I only connect from McDonald, so dont expect too much responsiveness from me :-( * Organisation The main organisation was pretty loose, the web site was open only one month before the meeting and room reservation only 15 days before. The meeting was with two parts: the first two days (week end) was "JGP" (Large Public Days). It was done under tents, on one of the main Strasbourg market place (good), but the theme of the two days was vague (we should have done an artwork with the public, to make it see the free software in use). The net result was that there where very little boots (less than 10) and nearly none followed the theme. The Public was not there. I don't know what kind of advertisement was done. Strasbourg is a very nice town, extremely pleasant to visit. On the sunday morning the local news paper wrote a full page on the RMLL subject (extremely nice) - alas the day was rainy and making computer work under the rain is quite difficult, even dangerous, so we didn't had the expected success. That said, the public that come was veri friendly. Dispite the mandatory theme we could have openSUSE boot, thanks to Jimmy Pierre. Hi all, Let me start with the important part: =========== We want you to THINK MORE ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR WORK for this openSUSE conference. What do YOU want to accomplish? What does YOUR team need to talk about? What features should be finished? What decisions should be made? Use the conference for that! PLEASE SEND IN BoF PROPOSALS for oSC! They take no preparation and barely any work as 'leader' - it's just an informal get-together. Yes, you can do that over dinner too, but - nobody takes notes, lots of beer... A BoF is NOT any more formal than a dinner meet but it does ensure the participants are focussed on the discussion, not the food, and sober ;-) Sending in a BoF proposal ensures you get a room for 40 minutes with no strings attached. And you never know who suddenly shows up and happens to be willing and able to take on some work! Aside from BoF's, we love more workshops and hack sessions. How about a hack session to fix up one or two modules in YaST. Or fix some kernel bugs. Or get a bunch of perl updates packaged. Or, to get more people working on your stuff, a workshop "hacking on YaST". A workshop "porting your app from sysv to systemd"... Register your session here: http://bit.ly/nsycEP ============ About the oSC deadline: Last monday the deadline for the oSC CfP was extended. We had a fair number of submissions already but the "interactive" proportion of sessions wasn't what we hoped. I'm sure that's partially due to lack of clarity about what we want, so let me try to explain a bit here too. We want to get more 'work done' at oSC. And focus more strongly on openSUSE. The last conference had many non-openSUSE people and the results were great - but for openSUSE it wasn't what it could've been. Now many of us get together only once a year at the conf and we could do more than listen to talks, have dinner and drink beer. That's why we want more BoF sessions (essentially team meetings), workshops (eg teach to package better, or test, or ...) and hack sessions (get together and do work). Each of these sessions we'll try to explain more. The BoF was explained a few weeks ago [1] and today the workshop will get some attention [2]. Next week I hope to get something out on how to efficiently do a hack session. Look at this: http://www.april.org/catalogue_libre it's a french brochure that do not advertise a distro but free applications it's sold at *0.5€* each (on paper, color), what I find extremely cheap. At first glance it seems to me specially fitted for ubuntu, (I don't know half of the applications). But it's a exemple of what we could do in several languages. This one is LaTeX, so may be not that easy to edit :-(), but I have also an other one, similar, on scribus. The open source community in Nigeria is not that strong because of lack of material like cds, dvds, posters, people don't really now about opensource very much except few students and it is more of ubuntu than openSUSE because thats what they see. These would no longer be the story when there are awareness around and people discover the freedom in linux/openSUSE, they will change their attitude towards it and want it, because people in Nigeria love free stuffs and i think it would interest them when they hear about the free softwares in linux/openSUSE. Hey all, Right now we have two openSUSE artwork repositories - the opensuse/art one and the opensuse-artwork one. The second has mostly marketingy stuff, the first one has mostly openSUSE app splashes and the like. But there is overlap. I'd like to clean it up and I'm willing to do the cleaning. That would result in all marketing materials (flyers, posters etc) going to the opensuse-artwork one and the distribution-related stuff going to opensuse/art. Yes, if anyone knows if we could rename opensuse-artwork into opensuse- marketing that would be awesome :D Cheers, Jos
