[opensuse-kde] KDE 4.6.3 still HAL / udev issues?
I updated to KDE 4.6.3 and when I plug in an USB stick the KDE device applet does not show it. Is there still an issue with udev / HAL? Do we still need to use SOLID_HAL_LEGACY=1 with KDE 4.6.3? Here with openSUSE_Factory + KDF (4.6.3) , and no hal at all, every usb key (vfat or ext3/4) I have are correctly detected, also Canon EOS 300D as camera, or my usb webcam. I didn't use the SOLID_HAL_LEGACY env var. Notice : under 11.4 if you install webyast, this one push hal again on the system. If I remember correctly this was only needed for oS < 11.3 since all other versions have usdisks available. And I guess those will always need it, no matter what new KDE release you install. I have exactly the same problem - USB disks are detected and assigned a device as shown in /var/log/messages but KDE 4.6.3 knows nothing of them. All worked find under 4.5.8 - the problem started with updating to 4.6.3. How does one set that environment variable to take effect when KDE runs (so I can test it to see if it fixes my problem)? 4.5.8? Never existed :-) You could start by checking out if udisks is even installed. rpm -q udisks hal -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

Well, whatever the last 4.5 version was before 4.6 was released (maybe 4.5.9 or 4.5.7, can't remember).
You could start by checking out if udisks is even installed.
rpm -q udisks hal
udisks is not installed - hal is 0.5.13-4.2.1.i586. Thanks. I was worried that it might try to pull in a whole lot of gnome dependencies (being in a gnome repository and all). I have it working now with the instructions here: http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=93337 If I notice any problems I'll try installing udisks/upower instead but for now it is OK. You never stated your distro version. On 11.2 I guess you have to set the environment variable to use HAL instead of udisks. But 11.2 is dead now anyway. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

True - my oversight.
On 11.2 I guess you have to set the environment variable to use HAL instead of udisks.
Yep - done and working now.
But 11.2 is dead now anyway.
Except that I have unsported V4L hardware for which the driver has never been submitted by the developer for inclusion (beats me as to why) and requires manual updating/patching every time there is a kernel update. I have other customisations too that are a PITA to keep repeating, so I have basically stopped at 11.2/2.6.35.20. It all works (now) so I don't see any reason to update. OTOH my laptop runs 11.4 because it all works out of the box. -- =================================================== Rodney Baker VK5ZTV rodney.baker@iinet.net.au =================================================== -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-kde+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-kde+help@opensuse.org

HAL shouldn't do any harm. Are you using SOLID_HAL_LEGACY=1 still? You shouldn't on 11.4. And what do you mean by "doesn't report". Now that I have my desktop working again, on a clean install of 11.4/4.6.3 on my laptop, the KDE device notifier reports the USB devices when plugged in but KDE will not let my regular user mount the devices. At the first glance, without knowing more ? I'd say you're missing some Devkit-rules / permissions. Sadly a repeating pattern atm, but due to CRS (Can't remember shit) I have no further help for you. Hello Gurus out there, what was the solution the last time this cropped up ? Yamaban out.

Thanks, but that wasn't it. I did post back to the list that it was solved - the workaround was to add nfts to /etc/filesystems. There is an open bug report for this as it should be there from installation.
