Thanks Sven, Alex and all who replied. Even though the pidgin conf is supposed to be in the .purple directory, it was the keyring in .gnome2 that was the culprit. I followed the steps at: http://forums.opensuse.org/install-boot-login/425581-pidgin-keyring-3.html and that did it. Thanks to everyone,.
