Second KDE desktop on F8

Hello, since I upgraded to KDE 3.0.4 on my SuSE 7.3 I am bothered by KDE when working on text konsole. Everytime when the screensaver goes active I am disturbed on my text konsole (after having worked with KDE and switched to e.g. tty1 by Ctrl-Alt-F1). When the screensaver switches on on the (now passive) KDE while worlking on tty1 I get the graphical kdm login prompt. When switching back to tty1 (Ctrl-Alt-F1) and to KDE (Alt-F7) I get the password prompt for my sreensaver. After entering it I get the KDE desktop as wanted. When I lock the screen from within KDE I also the kdm login prompt. Amasingly when I enter my password in this login prompt (no matter if I come from tty1 or KDE) I get a new KDE session which resides on F8. I can switch from to the other with Ctrl-Alt-F7 or F8 respectively. Since I am disturbed on the tty's by always being switched to the kdm login and since I do not want to have two KDE sessions running I would like to have the behavior I had before upgrading to 3.0.4. Can anybody help me out here since I do not have an idea which processes are called and hence where to modify. Let me what additional information you need. cu Stefan

UPDATING Kde

Hello to everyboy, Finally I was able to update my KDE 3.0.0 to KDE 3.0.5 in my Suse 8.0 with : rpm -Uvh --nodeps --force *, it was the only possibility to do that. After that I install : Kdebase-Suse and Susewm and I did "SuSEconfig". With this my system is workable but I don't know if really is working propertly because now it appears some Kde errors (the window to notify the errors). As root it desapeared my last configuration. Also when I check "About" in any application it says : Tuxracer version 1.0 (running in Kde 3.0.5) but when I open Kcontrol it shows : Kde version 3.0.4. I'm sure that it should be any easy way to update Kde than do this way. Anybody knows any manual or howto to update CORRECTLY the desktop. I think this is a task for KDE GROUP in the future because to have a very openning system (to update, to modify, ect ...) but don't know how to do ..... you know. Wait any information about UPDATING KDE. I know that finally I will do but ..... I'm trying more than one month. Brgds MC

KXMLEditor and SuSE 8.1

Hi! I'm trying to compile the KXMLEditor (http://sourceforge.net/projects/kxmleditor) with SuSE 8.1. It seems to be sucessful with this patch: (http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=559922&group_id=30…). But I'm just half the way through. The archive compiles and makes an execcutable, but the programm crashes with a KApplication-error on startup. I do know just very litte about KDE programming. Probably someone with deeper knowledge of KDE development could have a look at this problem? The maintainers of KXMLEditor are too busy in the moment. Update approach (Base System + KDE)

Hi *, How do I upgrade from 7.3 to 8.1 by using ftp (or YAST or YOU)??? I don't have a clue which one to use - and how and what updates the Base system and what kde???. Generally: Would you recommend an new installation via ftp (how long would this take using TDSL?) or an update of the existing system? I upgraded my 7.3/kde 2 installation with the kde303 packages ("manually"; some difficulties and now everything is messed up between kde 2 and kde 3 folders and apps :-() and thought about upgrading the whole base system. Any help/comments are appreciated Cheers Ian

Desktop background

Is it possible to set a default background picture in KDE? My system came with a bright red background that gives me a headache. I reset it each time I start Linux from the red background. How can I set the new settings as the default option so I do not need to change the background each time I start the machine? I am a total newbe to Linux, although a Windows and Mac user for many years. -- Ken Cameron

SuSE 8.1 printing in Landscape doesn`t work

When i try to print something in Landscape (for example with Kover) it doesn't work, the print is allways in Portrait. I'm using a HP LJ 5L, configured with YaST2 and CUPS. Everything else is working fine with the printer, but the problem with printing in Landscape is driving me mad. Who can help?
