[opensuse-factory] how to create a bootable CD from the DVD iso?
I'm sure someone's already asked, but I couldn't find the answer - how do I create a bootable CD from the Alpha6 DVD image? I usually install over pxe/ssh, but I've got a bit of a tough case, so figured I'd try booting from CD. (as I did with alpha5). /Per Jessen, Zürich --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

so far, whenever I downloaded a ISO for openSUSE, there was nothing special to take care of. Just burn it with k3b or any other favourite cd writer program; the boot sector and everything is included in the iso file Regards, Dominique TMF is a global management and accounting outsourcing firm with 72 offices in 56 countries and over 2,000 professionals. Yes, that's very true. The new thing in Alpha6 is that it doesn't come with any CD isos, which is what I need. As it happens I've now retrieved the boot.iso from : http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/SL-OSS-factory/inst-source/boot But that isn't normally mirrored by e.g. mirror.switch.ch. /Per Jessen, Zürich -- http://www.spamchek.com/ - your spam is our business. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

There's no 5-cd set, but the 1-cds for KDE and also GNOME are available (for x86 + x86_64). http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.3-Alpha6/iso/cd/ All additionally needed packages can of course be gotten from the factory repo. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Hej Martin, and I can boot and start an installation from those? I wasn't aware of that. /Per Jessen, Zürich -- http://www.spamchek.com/ - your spam is our business. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Yes full KDE or GNOME desktop installation in English only (unless you add the online repo or add-on cd). If you want text-install or minimal window manager install you might be in trouble. I'm not quite sure about the availability of those on the 1-cds. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

You could use the CD to boot and change the Installation Source in the boot menu of the CD (or with the install=... parameter). You could add an NFS source for installation. (Don't know if NFS works. FTP installation is broken and gives you curl errors (Bug 293004).) -- Andreas Vetter Fakultaet fuer Physik und Astronomie Universitaet Wuerzburg --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

NFS installation works fine - I did one earlier this morning, and I'm doing another one just now. Using the KDE CD to boot from is ok, but it's a bit big - perhaps we could have a mini-iso image (usually less than 50Mb) included on the DVD? /Per Jessen, Zürich -- http://www.spamchek.com/ - your spam is our business. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Aren't there mini-isos at opensuse.org? Anyway, as long you only need it to boot from, it should in fact be ok to burn just the first 25MB or so of the DVD iso to a CD. I haven't seen any (for the Alphas) for a while. Or maybe they are not being mirrored.

Hmm, that might be worth a try - I was also thinking of the download size though; bit of a waste to download 700MB when you only need 25Mb ... :-) Actually, the optimal solution _might_ be to amend the mkbootdisk script: "/boot/i386/mkbootdisk" and enable it to also make the mini-iso? /Per Jessen, Zürich -- http://www.spamchek.com/ - your spam is our business. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

The alphas do not have a ftp tree, so having a mini iso is pointless. And factory has it's own mini iso: http://ftp.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-OSS-factory/inst-source... Not if one is using a local FTP repository, e.g. the DVD loop-mounted on another machine. This is what I generally do (or would if FTP install weren't broken ATM). The mini-iso is ideal for this, though in my experience it's usually possible to use one that's from any recent version (maybe someone will point out an error in doing this!?) -- Cheers Richard (MQ) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

OK, agreed. You can still use the one from factory if you're quick after the announcement ;) Greetings, Stephan -- SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Having a mini-iso would enable me to quickly download and burn a CD that I can use to install from the DVD iso over NFS.
And factory has it's own mini iso:
http://ftp.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-OSS-factory/inst-source... Yeah, that's what I ended up using, although that one isn't very mini either - 135M or so. /Per Jessen, Zürich -- http://www.spamchek.com/ - your spam is our business. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

FYI, you could use NFS instead.

Yeah, it's biarch. I'm hesistant to sync out mini ISO you can't use unless you also download the DVD - so having a script available sounds like the best idea.
