[opensuse-factory] Adding installer to Rescue CD
Hi, Would it be possible to add the installer/updater to the 12.3 Rescue CD as well? Can be similar to the one of the Network install CD. I like keeping a rescue CD or USB stick at hand in case of trouble and it would be nice if it was multifunctional :-) Best regards -- Erwin Van de Velde G+: http://profiles.google.com/erwin.vandevelde -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

That would be against its purpose, IMO. Use the other CD images for that. Having the USB writeable and changes persistent is a different issue; dunno if that is possible. Currently you can add things with zypper, but they are lost on reboot. - -- Cheers Carlos E. R. Why would it be against its purpose? Rescue is nice, but sometimes the only thing you can do is reinstalling, so why not put the installer in this image? A possible use would be trying to rescue data from a broken computer, fixing the hardware (e.g. new hard drive) and then reinstalling and putting backups and the rescued data back in place. Well, for one: the NET CD is 200MB and the rescue CD is 500MB and they have nothing in common. So combining them makes it again hard to have it on CD. In general combining media is something we can do - our promo DVDs are a combination of two live cds and an install system. Is it not possible to just have one CD with same kernel, basic tools etc? I would think the installer is just a program running on a basic openSUSE... Could the installer not run on the rescue CD system? Also, for what I see, the rescue CD is very minimal, no CPU stress test, no smartmontools, test-disk, ... it seems pretty pointless and I would happily exchange the GUI for those tools. Better not. There are CDs dedicated to installation, and they do not contain rescue software. The rescue CD is different and has been requested for a long time.
Also, for what I see, the rescue CD is very minimal, no CPU stress test, no smartmontools,
It contains smartmontools-6.0-5.1.1.x86_64
test-disk,
Contains photorec-6.13-2.1.1.x86_64, which includes testdisk. How did you look at the sofware that was installed? You can see the entire list here: http://susepaste.org/13855134 - -- Cheers Carlos E. Ah thanks, I booted it shortly but have to admit I did not have much time back then. So it contains the required tools, nice... but I keep thinking that using the space left for the installer would be nice. I do not see why it could not come together, especially since for people like me it means that I will have to carry around 2 USB stick instead of just 1 :) Grz, -- Erwin Van de Velde G+: http://profiles.google.com/erwin.vandevelde -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Different roles. I prefer having more repair/restore tools and no installer. I use the DVD for installation, anyway. It has been a request for ages, an specific rescue image. - -- Cheers Carlos E. R. This is a strange argument since the live media have an installer too. Two different roles on one medium. Why would it not be possible for rescue + install? Regards,
Because it is a RESCUE CD _only_. Why would you want to install the rescue CD? Absolutely no installer is required. Several versions ago in 11.3, we used to have this as part of the install DVD. However, it was removed. I agree. We need lots more repair/restore tools geared towards openSUSE. Possibly some cloning tool with a gui? -- Cheers! Reinstall is often part of a system rescue, so it seems appropriate to me. The network install does not install the network CD either, just a full install over network, launched from the CD.

That would be nice, although things do not go wrong that often, but just in case :-) Regards, -- Erwin Van de Velde G+: http://profiles.google.com/erwin.vandevelde -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Regards,
You are right. It should offer this feature if all else fails. If you happen to find an older openSUSE 11.3 DVD, they had a feature that ran fsck, fixed Grub and checked the integrity of all packages installed from the DVD. I'll have to find the DVD and check. This "fix your system" would have been part of the DVD had some one stepped up to maintain it. Nobody stepped up to maintain and fix bugs and it was removed. -- Cheers! It wouldn't require the complete NET iso - the loader initrd and kernel is sufficient.
