KDE 3 and KDE 4 are not compatible, version 4 overrides.
They are, in a sense that they can coexist. This is just a matter to set up correctly a provide a way to launch the old version of the applications even if the new ones are installed. It's not that hard to do, the easiest way would be to use a wrapper script, so "kate" calls the KDE4 version of "kate" and "kde3 kate" calls the old one. Launching the correct application version from a menu is more trickier though (but it is possible if you really want).
No, I don't personally want to do it, I want to find it done. O:-) I found two menu entries for konqueror: both started version 4. If I entered kde 3 and opened the browser, it was version 4, inside version 3. I opened a file with kwrite and it was version 4. Everything that had a program in version 4 overrode the version 3 one, simply because the /usr path was found before /opt. There is no way as a user that I could mend that disaster. help:something failed because it didn't know how to open docbook help files - and help in kde are docbook files, no html (I didn't know that), so help didn't work. Search failed. Build search files failed. Most of it have corresponding bugzillas (I reported the help problems). - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
