As long as people with slow internet, like me, can still pull from somewhere that doesn't change every day, because it takes me days to download the DVD, for instance. If it is a moving target, I'm automatically out...
Not necessarly. It doesn't create the amount of a DVD every day, far from it. E.g. my factory installation wasn't updated in about 3 weeks, still zypper up reports:
Overall download size: 315,5 MiB.
That's feasible.
What about the installation DVD, will it be changed daily too?
Yes, but you don't have to download it :)
Well, but that is the problem precisely. If I want to download the factory installation DVD, in order to install it, I may not be able to download it before it changes. Suppose the DVD has 4700000000 bytes. With my 1 mbit/s ADSL, it takes 47000 seconds to download it, that is 13 hours, provided I don't download anything else during that time, and I don't power off. Even at my top speed, the server can change the ISO when I'm six hours on to the download process, and then I have to start again for a further 13 hours after the prior failed attempt of six hours... And if the download fails the checksum, then I need time to find out (maybe I'm sleep while it downloads), to manually run rsync or whatever to repair the image. Not nice. To solve this problem, the download site should have the current DVD, plus the DVD of the day before, and maybe the one before it, so that people with slow networks have a fair chance. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
