No we don't. All desktop environments have needed a sound manager, most of all because most sound hardware doesn't do sound mixing in hardware and only ALSA offers its own mixer plugin. So environments like enlightenment (ed), GNOME (esd) and KDE (aRts) all had their solution for doing the mixing. Both choices had their drawbacks, for aRts it was mostly that it was much much more than just a sound mixer and thus overkill.
