[opensuse-factory] Gross bugs in GM

This is a vent, but it's serious. Every time a GM comes out with gross bugs, I have feelings of hopelessness and inadequacy with regards to my beta testing of openSUSE. It's like I haven't done enough, didn't take good care and the baby was born retarded. Gross bug number 1 LiveCD KDE4, boot as Live system then click "Install". At the end of installation, during "Saving boot loader" phase, a loud alarm comes out of the PC speaker and installation doesn't proceed. Tried twice, it reproduces exactly the same. The computer is not frozen, I can use it. Check out processes with "top", see that "scr stdout scr" is taking up a lot of CPU. Kill "scr", installation resumes as normal, although the PC Speaker remains on and loud until reboot. I have verified that my BIOS doesn't have some bullshit "Antivirus protection" for MBR. The boot loader is set to be installed to PBR anyway. Ok, so I was able to work around this because I'm a sysadmin. But the question remains: What Would A Linux Newbie Do? Well, he would have to: - know how to access the console: [Ctrl+Alt+Fx] - know the command "top" - know ps axw | grep scr - know kill pid_of_scr Welcome to Linux, newbie! Have a lot of fun! Gross bug number 2 On this computer, I also have Windows. While in KDE, I click "Restart Computer" and choose "Windows" so next boot is directly into Windows. This works, then it works, then it works, then it works. It boots directly into Windows every fucking time I reboot the computer, no GRUB menu for me. In this case, I don't know yet what to do to work around this. I'll use Google and probably solve it, but the question is still there and it burns: What Would a Linux Newbie Do? Having Dave's solution whereby you maintain your own customized repo of installed rpms for your own unique hardware and software requirements without regard to artificial sourcing and other limiting factors is a good idea and given the likely hood that companies and organizations can suddenly go out of business or lose interest, support and their resources and their centralized repositories may suddenly disappear leaving you without recourse. Even recently, openSUSE experienced that power failure and thankfully, I had my local repo so I could continue installing my other systems including the updates that normally would have had to wait until the power failure was resolved. So for the price of a few gig that I have to download once anyway, I have a way to ensure I can recover my installation anywhere on my LAN even if O.O or Novell goes out of business or the distro is no longer supported due to 'age' or interest by the devs. Dave Rankin did a good job and gave us all a good tool and while it doesn't diminish the tool you pointed out, it gives a hedge against the day that is removed because of space or other considerations as well as being totally customized to my (or your if you use it) needs. Version 11.3 Teal latest DVD and postgresql-8.4.4-2.3.i586 from openSuSE with and /etc/init.d/postgresql fail to bootup or run directly. It even writes ~/data as /root/data. If it worked it should be (su - postgres) ~/pgsql/data. That is because postgres user has a home directory of /var/lib/pgsql Include is a the message that comes at boot time. With Factory (RC2?), I have lot of problems to write dvd's * k3b still don't write BD (sould be on 2.0, we have 1.92?) * strange error messages about write speed * refuse to writie some kind of files (from a VIDEO_TS folder) do this need to be reported through bugzilla or directly upstream? [opensuse-factory] 11.3 and Acer Aspire One

Hi, I try install new opensuse 11.3 and after installation kernel freeze during loading (after probing some pci slots). Does anyone see such behavior? Do you have idea how to fix it? It happen also when I boot from DVD and try to start rescue system. [opensuse-factory] loading packages.gz and friends

Folks, loading the various `packages.gz' files and its siblings for many repositories takes a very long time if your internet connection is slow. What about improving that? For example, I could imagine that those files are stored in a kind of git repository, and that yast2 does the equivalent of `git pull', which is extremely fast.
