I could only find Michael Brown's Fen Systems stand. Were SuSE there? Were anyone else there? Perhaps I had my eyes shut - I didn't get round all of it. I enjoyed meeting Michael Brown at Fen, and chatting for a few minutes. The stand is small, but is nicely set out. The products are clearly defined and with investigation by punters, the products will appeal. Nice one Michael. "Shallow people" will go for the glitz of the Microsoft stand, which in terms of real estate is predictably dominating. They are pushing some new-fangle gadget (something called "XP"?). They seemed to think it was quite good. I spoke to a representative on the stand, and was particularly impressed with a 'School Agreement' scheme, wherein, as I'm sure you'll know (I didn't), you purchase licences for all you workstations _capable_ of running Microsoft product. Splendid. You even have to licence your Linux boxes for Microsoft products, because they are on-site. Oh, and you don't even have the burden of owning the licence. You rent it. I thought this sounded like an excellent scheme, and, after recovering from my choking episode, I pointed out the merits and demerits of his plan for our school. He analysed our particular situation, and thought that, on reflection, some other purchase scheme may suit us best. I agreed with him that he was probably right, and we parted. A good day - low Linux presence :( -- Matt __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE video emails in Yahoo! Mail! http://promo.yahoo.com/videomail/

They were also the only company I found there who were leaping at people and trying to sell there stuff there and then.

Indeed one of the machines on the Fen System stand was running Windows. I did notice one stand had a Cobalt Qube on it, also NTL are pushing the NetPilot... -- Mark Evans St. Peter's CofE High School Phone: +44 1392 204764 X109 Fax: +44 1392 204763

Best to save it until we can do something more impressive with more desktop users. We deliberately avoided BETT because I'm too busy getting real customers ;-) I am thinking of organising a stand for BETT next year that would be a joint effort by a number of Linux parties eg SUSE, Mandrake, Redhat, and perhaps small companies from this list. If there is sufficient interest - and I believe now is the time to start planning - collective strength would be better. I also think that by next bet we will have several 10s of schools at least using Linux at the desktop and so it will have much more impact.

I think you will find that that was to demonstrate thin client log on to a Linux server from a Windows machine.

I could have loaned Michael one to put on the stand :-). Regards, -- IanL

...in order to demonstrate Cygwin/XFree86 and show people how they could dip their toes in the water by giving everyone access to Linux on the desktop without first ditching their existing Windows installations! It was good to meet several of you at BETT, although I'm still puzzled by the curious fact that almost everyone here chose Thursday. Those that didn't make it will probably be pleased to know that the interest in using Linux was phenomenal: at least an order of magnitude higher than last year. On Thursday and Friday we were busy throughout the day (Wednesday and Saturday are the quiet days at BETT). It was interesting to see that the resistance to using non-Microsoft products was very, very low - only one person that I spoke to said that they wouldn't consider Linux because of their existing commitment to Microsoft. The new MS licensing schemes are predictably unpopular and this is not helping RM; Connect version 3 will apparently be XP based and so schools wishing to remain with RM may have to upgrade all their hardware to be XP capable at the same time as paying for an RM upgrade and XP licences. All in all, a very successful show. I was particularly pleased to be told about two open-source school management information systems that were nearing public release. More to follow later... Michael
Hi Michael, I'm sorry I missed you on Friday - each time I passed you were in ernest conversation with someone! Where can I find a beta of ANY school admin stuff. My ex-school would have gone over to Linux if there had been anything - there wasn't so they didn't and I left! -- Best wishes, Derek

I've been on Thursday the last couple of years (though if I'd seen Sky's schedule before December I wouldn't have come on the Thursday...)

Never tried Saturday, though one time I did try Wednesday some of the exhibitors hadn't finished getting their stands set up...

I didn't look too closely at the RM stand, but dosn't this mean that they were in effect advertising "vapourware"...

Certainly in Devon these would probably need more selling to the LEA than to schools... -- Mark Evans St. Peter's CofE High School Phone: +44 1392 204764 X109 Fax: +44 1392 204763

He got that bit right at least. I don't suppose that he suggested buying a copy of Suse, thus avoiding licensing hassles & providing all the functionality of an MS based system at a much reduced cost?
