KWord (part of KOffice) is a frame-based DTP package, allegedly similar to FrameMaker (despite the word-processor-like name). AFAIK, it is "rapidly improving" in terms of stability etc. - this translates roughly into "get the latest version you possibly can".
The current stable release of KWord is the same as distributed with KDE 2.0.1 -- rather old. At the moment, KWord is being completely re-written in CVS, to take advantage of some improved widgets from Qt 3.0 which have been back ported to Qt 2. I can't really recommend the current stable version of KWord unfortunately, but it (and the rest of the KOffice suite look great. If you want to get the latest version, then you'll need to get it out of CVS -- I'm currently in the process of building KDE 2.1.1 on this machine, so I'm going to try the CVS version of KOffice on it (including Kivio a Visio style program, and Kugar, a reports program).
