Desktop Publishing Under Linux
Hi all Is anybody our there using the ndtef exam board? The reason I ask is thier reluctance to acknowledge the equality of wordprocessors and desktop publishers at a school level. part of the exam requirement is the ability to import text from a wordprocessor into a dtp package! this would effectively eliminate the use of staroffice and several other systems. So, if anyone knows of the existance of a dtp package under linux please let me know. Star can allow various "save as" formats and read in various formats. Why not import into Star (as the dtp) from (say) a text file created by a simple text editor? What do the exam board say when questioned? I know for CLAIT we set the method to be agreed by them and had no problem using non-MS products although their curriculum was clearly MS orientated. -- Best wishes, Derek Harding, (BA MIAP) ICT & Network Manager hardingd@warlingham.surrey.sch.uk

KWord (part of KOffice) is a frame-based DTP package, allegedly similar to FrameMaker (despite the word-processor-like name). AFAIK, it is "rapidly improving" in terms of stability etc. - this translates roughly into "get the latest version you possibly can". Out of interest: is the exam board just checking that pupils are able to jump through the hoop of copying and pasting text, or is there something more to it than that? If it was "from a wordprocessor to a markup language such as HTML", then I could see a point. Just asking. Michael

The current stable release of KWord is the same as distributed with KDE 2.0.1 -- rather old. At the moment, KWord is being completely re-written in CVS, to take advantage of some improved widgets from Qt 3.0 which have been back ported to Qt 2. I can't really recommend the current stable version of KWord unfortunately, but it (and the rest of the KOffice suite look great. If you want to get the latest version, then you'll need to get it out of CVS -- I'm currently in the process of building KDE 2.1.1 on this machine, so I'm going to try the CVS version of KOffice on it (including Kivio a Visio style program, and Kugar, a reports program).
