Hi Chris, This is a great idea. I do have some suggestions though: - Firstly, use Debian. with debian you make use of the Debian Jr project if needed -also package management is better, and you coulds have educational packages as a unique apt source. This way you could write a KDE program that can list the educational packages on the server and someone can point and click to download it. This would make administration easy. - If you need help...I will try to help where I can...and I am sure I can persuade some pals of mine to get on board. - If you do use Debian...I might be able to supply some server space and bandwidth. having not used XP I don't really follow what you are asking.... If it is 'can you run a graphical application as another user' the answer is yes, but whoever 'owns' the display has to give them permission to use it. I frequently use this to jump to another user a check (graphical) email. xhost +localhost su <other-user> <mail-app> exit xhost -localhost Bear in mind this is a nasty way to do the permissions. Between the xhost + & -, ANY user on the local machine can write to the display or read the mouse/keyboard. A better way is to use a 'magic-cookie', but I haven't worked that out yet... Simon Wood

Silly Question?

Hi all. Windows XP has "Task/User" switching whereby you can be running, say, IE6 and then have someone with a different account log in to theirs,leaving your processes as they are; is there a way to do this in Linux (command line or otherwise)? I'm not talking logging in/out, just dynamically switching user in the one desktop area? I'm sure someone told me this could be done, but I can'r remember how :-O Thanks! Paul

you can use the command 'su <username>' to become another user. If <username> is missing it assume you mean root. You return to the previous user with 'exit'. Root doesn't need the password, all other users do Another useful command is 'whoami'... Simon Wood

Ahhh....that's a bug in the release you have (some KDE apps seg-faulting and closing inexplicably). What you need to do is download the updates via the Update Manager and that seems to fix most of them. HTH Paul

Redmond crashes??

Has anyone tried Redmond off of the Linuxformat dvd as friend and I did on one machineand it kept crashing although we liked the layout Anybody had similar problems or it okay? Thanks for all the advice. I have found a reseller that claims to still do the MS Office Pro 2000 educational deal and have a moderately cunning plan for buying the same. (It probably bends Microsoft's EULA, but doesn't break the law---which is more than can be said for the EULA itself.) Of course, the machine will be getting a (SuSE) Linux partition and a copy of Star Office courtesy of yours truly and---next chance I get---I'll be starting my mum's computing rehab. Hi there Ron! Thanks for your comments regarding Linux and my son. Yes- we are trying him with Linux--in fact Redmond Linux! I've had it up for 9 days now non-stop. No crashes or major glitches; running SO 6 and Opera for web browsing. Works real nice and he seems to like it a lot (especially battleships ;-) As I said, uptime is 9 days and around 18 hours so far- well worth the look. There are some bugs in the release I have though updating it has helped; the network automounting is now broke in my profile, and so I have to type in smb:/LAPTOP to get the shares on my laptop up and running, but apart from those kinds of small things, nothing that would make me take it off my desktop at this time.
