[Bug 394318] New: Popping noise come out of the speakers when HP dv2000 is on battery
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=394318 Summary: Popping noise come out of the speakers when HP dv2000 is on battery Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Beta 3 Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Sound AssignedTo: tiwai@novell.com ReportedBy: joao@fraga.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Beta-Customer This is probably the most irritating bug I have ever found in 7 years of Linux desktop use. When my HP dv2000 series laptop is on battery, a popping sound comes out of the speakers (or headphones if connected) EVERY time the default alsa device is accessed: HDA Intel: CONEXANT Analog (hw:0,0) But I get no clicking noise when the laptop is on AC. Also, when I pass the 'acpi=off' to the kernel when booting, I also don't get clicking noises. This noise did not occur in openSUSE 10.3 and it does not happen in Windows Vista. There seems to be some nasty interaction between ACPI and snd-hda-intel... Extra info that may be useful: # cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec Codec: Conexant CX20549 (Venice) # cat /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save 0 # rpm -qa alsa* alsa-oss-1.0.15-45 alsa-utils-1.0.16-32 alsa-1.0.16-33 alsa-devel-1.0.16-32 alsa-plugins-1.0.16-50 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Even with the current pm-utils package, creating a file
/etc/pm/config.d/sound (the name does not really matter), just containing
SOUND_PM=0
should fix this, at the expense of more power consumption when on battery.
I can confirm that this fixes the audio popping issue on my Compaq F572US laptop which experienced the same issue as the original post. ~~ Andrew D. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
